Additional Information: Show/Hide Anticipated School Security Officer - PreK-3 position available for the 2025-2026 school year. Qualification for successful candidate:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Possess a valid NJ Driver's License
Retired law enforcement officer (LEO) with 20 or more years of law enforcement experience and retired in good standing with their agency.
Letter from Chief of Police required.
Possess the legal authority to carry a firearm; under New Jersey Law N.J.S.A. 2C:39-6.1
Ability to work effectively within a school environment.
Must maintain a physical fitness standard to complete the performance responsibilities of the position. These responsibilities may include but are not limited to: standing for long periods of time, walking for extended periods, restraining disorderly individuals, and responding to emergency situations in a quick and efficient manner.
Proficiency in basic computer skills.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable, as these are not all encompassing.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists in the supervision of students throughout all school grounds including: parking lots, roadways, paths, athletic fields, and all buildings and structures.
Patrol school grounds and notifies their supervisor or designee of the location of unauthorized persons or vehicles.
Greets visitors and provides directions, information, and guidance. This includes controlling visitor and employee building access.
Directs the orderly and safe movement of people and vehicles in school parking lots and on roadways.
Works with School Resource Officer(s) regarding Mahwah Police Department protocol and school crisis plan.
Monitor and observe video surveillance cameras.
Complete interior and exterior building checks throughout their designated shift.
Reports to their supervisor or designee any physical conditions which appear to be hazardous to students, staff, or visitors.
Work closely with the Principal, Administrator or their designee to develop security needs throughout the school day (arrival, dismissal, lunch, outside activities, etc.).
Assist the Principal, Administrator or their designee with monthly security and fire drills.
Assist the Principal, Administrator or their designee with guidance provided to substitute personnel regarding BOE security policies and procedures.
Notifies the Principal, Administrator or their designee in the event of an incident involving students; any incidents involving physical confrontation; and any incident that appears to be more than a momentary disruption.
Informs teachers or administrators of any infractions of rules and regulations observed during designated shift.
Cooperates with and provides assistance to Police, Fire and EMS personnel responding to any and all incidents on school grounds.
Provides whatever assistance is required to promote an orderly, safe, and pleasant school environment.
