About the Department
The Kennel Attendant is a part-time, entry-level, position performed under the general supervision of the Police Lieutenant or his/her designee. This position is expected to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks for the police department. Primary responsibilities include and are not limited to maintenance of the animal control facility, care of animals, mostly canines and felines, including possible exposure to vicious animals, rabies and other diseases. Job assignments may be performed with minimal guidance and supervision. Work is typically performed outside and may include work in inclement weather.
Position Duties
- Care of animals held at facility.
- Clean exterior and interior of animal control facility at the City’s corporation yard.
- Transport animals to and from veterinary offices and/or animal rescue.
- Prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Safe work practices.
- Cleaning supplies.
- Materials, methods, and practices of cleaning and routine maintenance.
- Animal care, behavior, and personality characteristics.
- Animal control techniques.
- Be punctual, alert, and responsible.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.
- Understand and follow oral and/or written instructions, policies, and procedures.
- Operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using software applications appropriate to assigned tasks.
- Use logical thinking and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written directions or oral instructions.
- Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
- Use Equipment such as small hand tools, catch poles, nets and protective equipment.
- Catch, transport, and restrain animals without harm to self, animals, or other people.
- Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under pressure of deadlines and changing priorities.
- Act with integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
Other Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED preferred, but not necessary.
- There are no educational prerequisites for this position. Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities would be previous experience involving maintenance or custodial duties and experience in working with animals.
