About the Department

Are you passionate about tennis and do you enjoy helping others? Cary’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources department is seeking highly skilled tennis players to join our team at the Cary Tennis Park!

These roles will assist other tennis professionals and full-time tennis staff in routine management of programs including camp, clinics, tournaments and special events. Ideal candidates will be comfortable teaching beginner, intermediate, and advanced players, both juniors and adults. Candidates should be USPTA or USPTR certified.
 
Work will require a flexible schedule which will include weekdays, evenings, and Saturday availability as needed.

This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.

This recruitment will be used to fill the following vacancies:

  • Tennis Instructor I
  • Tennis Instructor II
  • Tennis Professional I
  • Tennis Professional II
Applicants may apply for and may be considered for any of the positions, depending on qualifications.

Please note: Anticipated starting rates for each of the roles will be as follows: Tennis Instructor I: $14/hr, Tennis Instructor II: $18/hr, Tennis Professional I: $23/hr, and Tennis Professional II: $30/hr. 

Position Duties

  • Assists senior tennis professionals and full-time tennis staff as required
  • Leads or assists other tennis professionals and full-time tennis staff with camp and clinic instruction
  • Encourages and promotes utilization of the Cary Tennis Park
  • Manages program and participant evaluations
  • Assists with tournaments/special events
  • May teach private lessons
  • Develops private lesson clientele
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of tennis skills, rules and strategies and some knowledge of other sports
  • Knowledge of modern principles and practices of recreation and physical education
  • Knowledge of business administration and practices in planning and researching programs, clinics and tournaments
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and the public verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records
  • Ability to resolve disputes with fairness and impartially. 

Other Qualifications

Education and Experience
Tennis Instructor I and Tennis Instructor II: 
Requires a high school diploma/GED and experience playing tennis at the High School Varsity level or other equivalent tennis playing experience.

Tennis Instructor II requires at least one year of teaching experience.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:

  • Some collegiate tennis experience
  • USPTA 3 or USPTR equivalent certification
  • Experience teaching beginner and intermediate players
Tennis Professional I and Tennis Professional II:
Requires a high school diploma/GED and at least three years of combined teaching and playing tennis experience.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:
  • Four years of collegiate-level tennis playing experience
  • USPTA or USPTR certification
  • USPTA rating of 4.0 or higher
Physical Requirements 
This position requires the ability to be out on the tennis courts, in some cases in extreme weather conditions, for extended periods of time and to feed tennis balls for extended periods of time.
