Department Summary:
We at the Department of Ophthalmology at Boston Children's Hospital provide the most advanced care for children with vision problems, from the simplest to the most complex conditions like cataracts, eye injuries, and juvenile glaucoma. Position Summary:
Examines and cares for children and adults with eye problems. Performs comprehensive eye examinations and advanced specialized testing under the supervision of an ophthalmologist.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducts Comprehensive Eye Exams: Performs detailed eye examinations upon physician referral, verifies referral appropriateness, and uses specialized tests (e.g., visual acuity, field, color vision, fundus photography) to diagnose and recommend treatment options.
  • Administers Non-Medical Treatments: Develops and implements non-surgical treatment plans for ocular disorders as prescribed by ophthalmologists, including therapeutic devices and interventions.
  • Monitors and Adjusts Treatment Plans: Designs individualized treatment programs, monitors outcomes, and adjusts or discontinues treatments as needed, while communicating with physicians and care teams.
  • Provides Patient and Family Education: Builds professional relationships with patients and families, explains procedures and results, and incorporates their needs into care plans.
  • Collaborates and Documents Care: Works with multidisciplinary teams, maintains detailed medical records, prepares reports for stakeholders, and ensures follow-up care.
  • Supports Education and Research: Contributes to residency training, participates in quality improvement and research initiatives, and engages in professional development and scholarly activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required

Licensure/Certifications:
  • Current certification as an Orthoptist by the American Orthoptic Council AOC or an equivalent level of certification from an accredited foreign program.
