About Us:
The City of Glendale Parks and Recreation Department is split into two distinct areas:
  • The Parks Division manages and maintains all public parks, open spaces, trails, storm water retention basins, landscaping at municipal facilities and Thunderbird Conservation Park. The Division is also responsible for monitoring and ensuring the safety and security of park and facility use.
  • The Recreation Division offers opportunities to enhance the social, physical, mental and economic health of our community through a variety of diverse recreation programs and facilities. Recreation programs and events are held at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, the Glendale Adult Center, Historic Sahuaro Ranch, the five community centers and at basketball, tennis, skate courts and other recreation facilities throughout the city.

The Role:

This is the first level in the Service Worker series.  Performs skilled and semi-skilled construction, maintenance, and repair work in an assigned area of responsibility.

Salary:
This position is:
  • FLSA non-exempt, and will earn overtime for any hours worked over 40 in a week.
  • A Grade 310 with with an hourly pay rate between $20.54 - $30.80.

Holiday, Vacation, and Sick Leave:

Regular status positions offer:
  • The City of Glendale observes 10.5 holidays per year, and full-time employees are also granted an additional 12 hours of holiday special leave to celebrate their cultural or religious holidays throughout the calendar year. 
  • Vacation leave accrues at:
    •  5.33 hours per pay period (138 hours/17.25* days per year)
    • Increases to 6.12 hours after 5 years
    • Then caps out at 7.6 hours after 10 years of service.
  • Sick leave accrues at 4.4 hours per pay period (114 hours/14.25 days* per year).

* Days per year estimates are based on an 8-hour work day. 

Retirement:

  • The current contribution rate is 12%.
  • Contributions are mandatory, and are collected each pay period.

Position Duties

  1. Maintains parks, right-of-ways, parking lots, and bike paths.
  2. Operates mowing equipment, chain saws, weed eaters and other equipment.
  3. Maintains and adjusts sprinkler systems, provides irrigation services, maintains irrigation equipment, and removes graffiti.
  4. Trims trees and bushes, and cares for plants.
  5. Repairs or replaces park playground and recreation equipment, picnic benches and tables.
  6. Marks and reconditions playing fields and assists with set up for sports and special events.
  7. Repairs backstops, bleachers, and dug out areas. 
  8. Installs and maintains park signs, fences, and gates.
  9. Sets and pours new playground concrete areas. 
  10. Responds to, and resolves citizen complaints pertaining to parks facilities.
  11. Explains and enforces park policies and regulations to park patrons.
  12. Maintains high visibility to dissuade vandalism and crime in parks facilities.
  13. Assists with animal control in parks facilities.
  14. Assists with maintenance, repairs, and customer service at City cemetery.
  15. Explains and enforces park policies and regulations to park patrons.
  16. Ensures that reserved facilities are maintained in a safe, clean condition; checks for permits.
  17. Provides assistance in emergency situations; calls for police or medical assistance.
  18. Other job-related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience in construction, maintenance, and repair work and/or in the operation of light, medium and heavy equipment related to area of assignment.

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education.  

Knowledge of:

  • Rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to area of assignment
  • Materials, tools, equipment, safety hazards and precautions common to the assigned areas of responsibility
  • Hazard, safety rules, precautions related to equipment operation
  • Traffic laws, ordinances, rules and regulations as they relate to equipment operation
  • Street layouts and routes

Ability to:

  • Read and understand blue prints, technical diagrams, and maps
  • Barricade work sites according to the Phoenix barricade manual
  • Understand and follow safe working practices
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Deal courteously with the public
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and citizens
  • Operate and perform maintenance and minor repair on light, medium, and heavy equipment
  • Perform general maintenance and service requirements of equipment in area of responsibility
    Understand and carry out oral and written instructions and work independently
  • Accurately and timely complete reports and logs; record daily work activities and enter and retrieve information on computers
  • Identify paint coatings for material and color matching
  • Operate and understand atmospheric sensing devices
  • Maintain the appropriate state of Arizona driver license with relevant endorsements
  • Coordinate hand and eye movements
  • Operate city vehicles

Special Requirements

  • This position is classified as safety-sensitive which requires candidates to successfully undergo drug and alcohol testing prior to employment. They will be subject to further drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale Substance Abuse policy. A post-offer physical assessment is required. The City of Glendale will incur the cost of all required testing. 
  • Valid Arizona class D driver license.
