PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:  

The Optometrist provides quality vision services to infants, children and adolescents within a community-based setting that promotes healthy lifestyles, prevention of illness and injury and management of chronic conditions. Provides care in collaboration with the center’s team of physicians, nurse practitioners, behavioral health and dental providers, pharmacists, nurses and medical assistants. 

 

Activities involve direct patient care, optometric assessment, diagnosis, treatment, referral for specialty services as needed and follow-up. Provides interpretation of and referrals as needed for retina screening images of adult patients living with diabetes.

DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES: (Essential Functions: Duties and responsibilities noted with bullets are the essential functions of the job).
 

Patient Care Responsibilities 

  • Provide outpatient care for patients with eye-related disorders and conditions in accordance with the Virginia Board of Optometry
  • Perform comprehensive diagnostic examinations, management and treatment of conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system to patients across the lifespan, with a focus on the pediatric age group
  • Prescribe corrective lenses 
  • Administer or prescribe treatment and medication to patients to treat eye conditions
  • Promote health by advising patients concerning eye health and medical conditions that affect eye health
  • Refer patients for specialty care as appropriate
  • Review retinal images of diabetic patients and refer to ophthalmologist as needed
  • Complete accurate documentation in patient medical record
  • Ensure a high standard of patient care and service, addressing patient concerns and providing support throughout the screening process. 
  • Adhere to optometry visit documentation standards and templates
  • Adhere to clinical policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines related to vision care 

Other Duties 

  • As assigned by Associate Director for Vision Services, may be asked to provide training for primary care staff on vision screening and appropriate triage of acute eye complaints
  • Participate in Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement (QA/QI) System as relevant to eye care services
  • Participate in peer review process for optometry care
  • Participate in risk management and incident reporting system as related to vision care
  • Participate in continuing education to provide the highest quality of care to the patient population and to maintain current licensure and certification 

QUALIFICATION/EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Required Qualifications and Experience 

  • Possession of a current Virginia license to practice optometry. 
  • Graduation from an accredited school of optometry, residency training preferred.
  • Ability to provide care to children of all ages.
  • Current CPR or Advanced Life Support certificate.
  • Experience in Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) preferred.
  • Ability to document accurately in electronic medical record.
  • Spanish fluency preferred.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision with multiple internal and external partners collaboratively and supportively.
