Minimum Qualifications
This recruitment is being conducted to fill one full-time vacancy for the position of Communication Systems Specialist, which may be filled at the I or II level, depending on the qualifications, for the Information Technology Services Division of the County Executive Office for Napa County. The eligibility list established by this recruitment may also be used to fill current and future full-time, part-time, limited term, and extra help vacancies for up to one year.
About the Position:
Napa County is seeking a Communications Systems Specialist to join our Radio Operations Team! The Communication Systems Specialist will be responsible for installation, maintenance or repair of communications and electronic equipment, with a specialty focus and interest in radio communications. The ideal candidate possess a strong, technical foundation in configuring and managing network infrastructure to support critical communication systems used throughout Napa County. Proficiency in routing, switching, and network security is strongly desired.
The selected candidate must be willing to work nights, weekends, holidays and irregular hours, be available for on-call/standby work, and significantly travel to remote sites throughout the County, including off-road areas.
Experience and Education – Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Option 1:
Experience: Two years of journey level experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of communications and electronic equipment.
Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by technical instruction in electronic communication systems installation and maintenance.
Option 2:
Education: Completion of academic, military, or vocational programs leading to an associate degree in electronics or communications technology or its equivalent.
Experience and Education – Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
- Option 1: Four years of experience performing network and systems support, installation, maintenance, and repair of communications and electronic equipment, including experience in the following: phone based exchange (PBX) administration, voice over IP (VoIP), network video monitoring systems (NVMS), wired/wireless network infrastructure and operation of land mobile radio (LMR) equipment, or radio over IP (RoIP), data networking infrastructure and microwave networks comparable to a Communications Systems Specialist I in Napa County; and equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by technical instruction in electronic communication systems installation and maintenance.
- Option 2: Two years of experience performing network and systems support, installation, maintenance, and repair of communications and electronic equipment, including experience in the following: phone based exchange (PBX) administration, voice over IP (VoIP), network video monitoring systems (NVMS), wired/wireless network infrastructure and operation of land mobile radio (LMR) equipment, or radio over IP (RoIP), data networking infrastructure and microwave networks comparable to a Communications Systems Specialist I in Napa County; and equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by technical instruction in electronic communication systems installation and maintenance.
Required License:
Possession of a valid California Drivers’ License.
If qualifying under Pattern 2 for Communication Systems Specialist II, possession of a valid General Radiotelephone Operator’s License (GROL) issued by the Federal Communications Commission.
Highly Desired License:
CCENT or CCNA, CompTIA, A+, Com TIA Network+, or an equivalent certification is desirable.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and irregular hours.
- Standby call-back availability.
- Significant travel to remote sites throughout the County, including off-road areas.
