Duties and Responsibilities:
• Administrative Support for School Visits including email communications and follow-up
• Handle phone calls and cross-departmental communications
• Maintain and input data records
• Greet school groups and explain field trip rules
• Conduct school field trip amphitheater presentations
• Assist in developing materials for school field trips
•Transport school field trip lunches to designated storage areas
• Facilitate Zoo Camp, special event activities, on-grounds interpretation, and other STEAM programs
•Demonstrate and clearly articulate educational and conservation program content and philosophy
• Handle and present Zoo Connection Animals as required for programming
• Attend and participate in regular departmental and all-staff meetings
• Able to deal courteously and effectively with the public always, and to represent the institution at the highest standard of professionalism
• Effectively communicate instructions and information to large groups of students and adults
• Uphold brand standards in all official appearances and educational presentations
• Establish and maintain professional working relationships with co-workers and other department personnel, in accordance with The Living Desert Team Member Handbook
• Perform general office tasks, manage reservations, and conduct research as necessary
• Maintain a safe and clean working environment
• Undertake other related duties as necessary to achieve department objectives
• Contributes to desert conservation through reduction of waste, water and energy use, and inspiring guests and team members to take conservation actions
Requirements
Specific Skills:
• Broad knowledge of desert natural history and science is highly desired
• Knowledge of STEAM Curriculum and NGSS standards desirable
• Knowledge of evaluation
• Informal and formal teaching and interpretive skills preferred
• Strong interpersonal abilities are required
• Animal handling skills are desired
• Software literate in Microsoft, Word, and Excel
• Familiarity with Windows OS
• Ability to teach children and adults in non-traditional settings is required
• Good observational skills
• Must have strong organizational skills
• Ability to record observations intelligently
• Ability to give and comprehend written and oral instructions, and to accurately carry out such instructions
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
• Ability to work with others in a team setting
• Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment
• Strong conflict-resolution skills Qualifications: Prefer AA or AS or higher degree in education or a science related field. Will substitute training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities. Valid California driver license. Must be insurable on The Living Desert's automobile policy. Equipment Used: PC computer, general office equipment, telephone, 2-way radio, electric and gas cart, golf vehicles, digital cameras, scanner, audio-visual equipment. Conditions of Work: PHYSICAL EFFORT: Sitting, standing, walking, bending, out-of-doors hiking, some lifting to 50 lbs. DISCOMFORT/RISKS: Occasional exposure to the extremes of the desert environment, i.e. heat and aridity. HOLIDAY/EVENING WORK: Holiday, evening and weekend work may be required. TRAVEL: Occasional field trips, workshops, seminars, conferences, & program presentations. This class specification should not be interpreted as all inclusive.
