Payroll Team Lead (Vets)

Hybrid (Office in Handforth / WFH) / Permanent/Full-time

Are you an experienced payroll professional with a passion for leadership and continuous improvement? We’re looking for a dynamic Payroll Team Lead to oversee payroll operations for our Vet practices, supporting over 9,000 colleagues across the business.

About the role

As Payroll Team Lead, you’ll manage a team of 8 and ensure the delivery of a high-quality, accurate payroll service. You’ll play a key role in team development, stakeholder engagement, and driving process improvements. This is a fantastic opportunity to lead in a fast-paced environment while making a real impact on colleague experience.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead, coach, and develop the Payroll Team to deliver excellent service.
  • Oversee end-to-end payroll processing and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Act as a second line of escalation for payroll queries and issues.
  • Collaborate with internal teams including People Services, Finance, and Operations.
  • Monitor performance metrics and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support audits and ensure data integrity in partnership with Payroll Risk and Compliance Managers.
  • Keep policies and procedures up to date with legislative changes.

 

What we’re looking for

Essential:

  • Proven experience in leading or supervising a payroll team.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, auto-enrolment, RTI, and HMRC compliance.
  • Experience managing high-volume, complex payrolls.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • High attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with integrity.
  • A genuine passion for pets and creating a great place to work.

Desirable:

  • Experience with SAP payroll systems.
  • CIPP membership.
