Hybrid Warden, Aaqqigiarvik Correctional Healing Facility at Department of Justice

Reporting to the Director of Corrections, the Warden is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the operations of a territorial correctional facility in accordance with Corrections Division policies and standards. The position ensures the safe and secure custody of inmates while supporting rehabilitation and reintegration, consistent with the Division’s mission and values. As a member of the division’s management team, the Warden provides leadership in operational planning, program delivery, and staff management, and ensures services align with Corrections Act, Criminal Code of Canada, Prisons and Reformatories Act, Youth Criminal Justice Act, and other applicable legislation.

Responsibilities

The Warden oversees all aspects of facility operations, including custody, safety, inmate programming, and staffing. This includes managing budgets, setting operational goals, and contributing to strategic planning. The position is responsible for ensuring compliance with divisional directives, legal requirements, and safety standards, and supports restorative justice and reintegration initiatives within the facility.

The Warden supervises staff and leads human resource activities such as recruitment, training, discipline, performance evaluations, and succession planning, while promoting a respectful and inclusive workplace that reflects Inuit societal values. The role also manages the delivery of inmate programming based on risk assessments and case planning, ensuring documentation and progress tracking is maintained.

The Warden provides direction on security operations, enforces safety and contraband protocols, coordinates with law enforcement for escorts and transports, and maintains communication across facilities and correctional partners. The position also acts as a liaison with the public and other stakeholders, monitors compliance reporting, and supports emergency and crisis response planning.

Qualifications

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized degree in Social Sciences, Criminology, or a Justice-related field. A minimum of six (6) years of experience is required, with preference given to those with experience in correctional facilities. Six (6) years experience in institutional facility management and operations, program development and evaluation, strategic planning, or crisis response will also be considered. In addition, applicants must have at least three (3) years of progressive managerial experience and hold a valid Class 5 Driver’s License. First Aid/CPR certification is also requirement. Applicants that don’t currently possess First Aid/CPR certification must obtain it during the probationary period.

This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
