Application Support Engineer-Intermediate (Helpdesk + Full‑Stack) – Remote
Position Overview
We are seeking an Application Support Engineer who is equally comfortable resolving Level 1/2 help‑desk tickets and diving into full‑stack code to diagnose or enhance a production system. You will be the first line of technical support for a high‑volume ticket queue, collaborating closely with developers, DevOps, and business users to keep mission‑critical applications running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities
Primary Area | What You’ll Do |
Helpdesk & Customer Support (60 %) | • Triage, resolve, and document incoming support tickets. • Provide clear, courteous customer service to non‑technical stakeholders. • Escalate recurring issues and knowledge gaps to the development team leads. |
Application Analysis & O&M (30 %) | • Reproduce defects, read Java stack traces, and propose root causes. • Execute SQL queries for data investigations or small fixes. • Contribute simple code patches (front‑ and back‑end) under senior guidance. |
Process & Continuous Improvement (10 %) | • Maintain accurate, up‑to‑date runbooks, KB articles, and ticket notes. • Suggest workflow optimizations and automation ideas to reduce the ticket backlog. |
- U.S. citizenship and active DHS‑accepted Public Trust (or higher).
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.
- 2 to 5 years combined experience in helpdesk/technical support and application development or O&M.
- Proven ability to follow ITIL/SDLC processes and keep meticulous documentation.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
Desired Skills
- SQL – crafting queries, performing data look‑ups, basic data‑fix scripts.
- Java – reading stack traces, understanding exception hierarchies.
- Familiarity with ServiceNow (SNOW), Jira, and basic Windows administration.
- Exposure to front‑end (HTML/CSS/JavaScript) and back‑end (Java, Spring, or similar) code bases.
- Experience supporting users within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agencies.
Soft‑Skill Must‑Haves
- Customer‑first mindset – friendly, patient, solutions‑oriented.
- Process discipline – follows SOPs, change‑control, and security rules.
- Clear communicator – conveys complex issues in plain language.
- Documentation champion – updates KB/runbooks without prompting.
- Proactive collaborator – flags patterns, trends, and ideas to the dev team.
- Dependable & punctual – meets SLAs and participates actively in stand‑ups.
