Job Summary: The position is in the Transportation and Grounds Section of Engineering Service under the direct leadership of its supervisor at the Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) located in Louisville Kentucky with several Community based outpatient clinics.

Major Duties:

  • Major duties and responsibilities include: Operates trucks 26,000 lbs or less, busses, passenger vans, vehicles, tractors, power equipment, snow removal equipment and all other related equipment of the unit. In the operations of the above, incumbent transports patients, both ambulatory and wheelchair, operates passenger busses on scheduled or special runs from one location to another, operates the trucks, tractors, and grounds equipment to maintain grounds, parking lots, snow removal, material handling and general hauling necessary for maintenance, and hauls clean and soiled linen over public roads to and from Government installations. Transport patients between hospitals, convalescent centers, medical treatment facilities and private residences. Loads, unloads, and secures patients utilizing wheelchair tie-downs and seat belts, taking care of their comfort and special needs. Drives vehicles over public roads to transport personnel, hospital supplies, hospital equipment and mail. Operates patient transport vehicles equipped with hydraulic wheelchair lifts used to load and unload wheelchair bound patients. Escorts wheelchair bound patients to and from their designated rooms, checks patients in and out of facilities, ensures patients are at the correct location, has correct paperwork, charts or equipment. Performs operator maintenance on all hand and gasoline driven equipment in Operations Section. Coordinates trips to assist other drivers in the unit to limit trips and hold time and mileage to a minimum. Fills and levels holes in damaged roads; rakes and mulches leaves; mows grass; and sweeps walks and parking lots. Qualifications: To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/29/2025. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent must be in good physical condition to push 800-pound carts up the loading ramp and must have satisfactory muscular coordination to manipulate the double hand and foot-brake system if vehicle that is operated is equipped. Must be capable of handling the physical and mental demands of driving prolonged periods in all type of inclement weather and adverse driving conditions. Works irregular tours when needed and as emergencies arise, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays. The employee may be required to work overtime, irregular shift on a scheduled or emergency basis. May be exposed to extremes of hot and cold temperatures and all types of weather conditions while working outdoors. May be exposed to long hours of driving. Work will involve lifting, pulling, pushing, stooping, climbing and working in cramped positions. Incumbent may be required to perform physical labor in the upkeep of Facility and Grounds. Is required to work under various weather and road conditions, to operate snowplow and sand/salt spreader during icy and snowy conditions. Works outside in all kinds of weather and inside in areas that may be dusty, drafty, and noisy. The equipment and tasks involved at this level frequently require special care to avoid serious injury. The incumbent is responsible for following all safety rules, regulations and traffic signs. Special precautions must be taken to avoid and prevent injuries. Personal protective equipment such as hard hats, gloves, etc., must be worn when conditions justify their use.
