Job Description:
The Gifted Education - Center Based program (Discovery Program) in the Douglas County School District serves gifted students grades 2 - 6 who require a higher level of support than those who benefit from universal and targeted gifted programming services alone. Applicants must have demonstrated knowledge and skill regarding the components of effective gifted education instruction and the ability to individualize instruction based on the cognitive, social, and emotional needs of gifted learners. Additionally, applicants should have demonstrated knowledge of child development, behavior management in the context of a self contained gifted classroom, consultation, and developmental needs of school-aged children and adolescents. Further, applicants should have demonstrated and effective case management skills, effective written and oral communication skills, the ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative relationships with school personnel, students, and parents; demonstrated understanding and empathy necessary for working with students and their families, and demonstrated ability and desire to function as a team member.

Responsibilities:
Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
Establish a climate for learning through positive classroom management techniques. Utilize procedures to communicate clear behavioral expectations.
Counsel students to encourage and support student achievement.
Use rubrics, scoring guides, and/or samples of student work to communicate the critical attributes of advanced student performance and to provide documentation of defensible and consistent grading practices.
Use appropriate assessment information in instructional planning, implementation, and evaluation of student learning, including development of the Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) for all students.
Design instruction based on formal and informal assessments of student abilities and needs. Differentiate instruction to meet student needs by teaching higher-level thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills and identifying and sharing learning resources that support higher level thinking skills in all areas.
Collaborate with other service providers to plan and implement instruction for students with special needs through a responsive instructional model.
Recognize the learning and developmental differences of students with gifts and talents, promote ongoing self-understanding, awareness of their needs, and cognitive and affective growth of these students in school, home, and community settings to ensure specific student outcomes.
Perform other duties as assigned or requested

Communicate with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems
Prepare student, attendance and activity reports as required by administrators.
Prepare, administer, assign and grade tests and assignments to evaluate student progress, reporting grades using District software.
Establish and communicate clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects to students.
Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods (e.g., lectures, technology, discussions).
Certifications:
Endorsement in Gifted Education - Colorado Department of Education, Valid Colorado Teaching License - Colorado Department of Education
