Job Summary: Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) has a crucial need for expert neurological care of Veterans. The TVHS Neurology Service provides care for all Veterans with neurological disorders at both Nashville and Murfreesboro campuses. Staff Neurologists cover the inpatient services (bed service and consultations) and outpatient clinics.
Major Duties:
- VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases. Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME). Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement). The Tennessee Valley Healthcare System Headache Center of Excellence has an exciting recruitment opportunity for a full-time provider in Nashville. Ideal candidates would be board certified or board-eligible in neurology and will have completed a fellowship with a focus on headache medicine by the time of employment. Our Headache Center of Excellence employs a multidisciplinary approach to headache management, drawing upon expertise from various fields including health psychology, clinical pharmacy, neurology, physiatry, and pain management. We are supported by a dedicated care coordinator and are excited to soon integrate a nutritionist into our team. This comprehensive approach allows us to provide exceptional, patient-centered care and to advance the field of headache medicine through innovative treatments and research. Our mission: To improve headache care quality, delivery, and access for veterans living with headache disease, including migraine, cluster headache, and headache associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other military exposures, including open burn pits. The Tennessee Valley Healthcare System (TVHS) is a level 1A integrated tertiary health care system comprised of medical centers in Nashville, TN and Murfreesboro, TN and twenty (20) additional community-based clinics in Middle Tennessee. TVHS provides ambulatory care, primary care, and secondary care in acute medicine and surgery, as well as specialized tertiary care and a full range of extended care and mental health services. Functions/Scope of Assigned Duties: a. Develop and maintain a faculty ambulatory Neurology practice, including video, that provides extensive expertise in the treatment of various neurologic conditions, focused on, but not limited to: Headache Medicine. b. Develop and maintain a faculty ambulatory Neurology practice, with a focus on self management, education, and the care of patients with headache throughout the continuum of care. c. Participate in activities necessary to ensure the TVHS Neurology membership in the VA Headache Centers of Excellence (HCoE); these may include patient care, administrative and research activities. d. Make diagnosis by a targeted history and physical examination and the performance and interpretation of diagnostic studies. Prescribe appropriate treatment for patients and provide recommendations or definitive evaluation for neurological disorders in the referral region through consultation, telemedicine and telehealth. Authorization of care in the community as appropriate. e. Communicate with referring providers, program personnel, veterans and their families regarding neurological care. f. Educate and provide consultation to other health care providers regarding neurological disorder management. g. Provide education and training to nurses, technicians and staff as appropriate. h. Apply for, and if obtained, maintain Veterans Affairs funding to continue patient-oriented research to improve the quality of care of patients with headache and other neurologic conditions. i. Participate in clinical trials and other research initiatives. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m, Alternate work schedule may be discussed
Qualifications: To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Be board-certified or board-eligible in neurology and have completed a fellowship with a focus on headache medicine by the time of employment. Physical Requirements: The work is largely office based and in a sedentary setting. No manual labor is required above ordinary situations.
