Job Summary:
Panelmatic is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Testing Technician, Switchgear to join our Houston, TX team. This role is responsible for performing functional, electrical, and quality testing of low- and medium-voltage switchgear assemblies prior to shipment. The ideal candidate has strong experience in electrical systems, troubleshooting, and interpreting schematics, with a focus on safety, accuracy, and efficiency.
Job Duties:
- Perform functional and electrical testing of switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), and control panels in accordance with engineering specifications, UL standards, and customer requirements
- Conduct point-to-point wiring checks, insulation resistance (megger) testing, and high-potential (hipot) testing
- Verify proper operation of protective relays, breakers, control circuits, and instrumentation
- Execute Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) with internal teams and customers when required
- Identify, document, and troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues, working closely with engineering and production teams to resolve discrepancies
- Interpret and work from electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and layout drawings
- Ensure all testing activities comply with safety standards (NFPA 70E, OSHA) and company procedures
- Maintain accurate test reports, documentation, and quality records
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to testing processes and quality control
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required (technical certification or associate degree preferred)
- 5+ years of experience testing electrical control panels, switchgear, or similar equipment
- Strong ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and diagrams independently
- Hands-on experience with electrical test equipment (multimeters, megger, hipot testers, relay test sets, etc.)
- Working knowledge of low- and medium-voltage systems
- Familiarity with UL 508A, UL 891, or similar standards
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate degree in Electrical Technology or related field
- Experience with protective relays (SEL, ABB, Schweitzer, etc.) and relay testing software
- Knowledge of PLC systems and basic programming/troubleshooting
- Prior experience with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and customer interaction
- NFPA 70E certification or formal electrical safety training
- Experience with medium-voltage switchgear and power distribution systems
