WHAT YOU’LL DO:

Deep Canvassers are responsible for the following:

  • Door to Door canvassing, holding transformative conversations to help shift our neighbor’s viewpoint to a narrative rooted in solidarity and liberation for queer Missourians with the end goal of building a pro-trans majority,
  • Active listening, without judgment, helping our neighbors feel more comfortable sharing their views honestly.
  • Sharing your own stories and contributing stories to a collective story bank and also sharing those stories to help build connection.
  • Connecting and empathizing with neighbors around shared values and experiences.
  • Accurately and mindfully track conversations using OpenField and VAN.
  • Pre-briefing and debriefing conversations daily with the Campaign Manger and Data Manager.
  • Attending weekly Deep Canvass meeting for ongoing training, learning, and sharing of best practices.

WHO YOU ARE & KEYS TO SUCCESS (the must-haves)

You have canvassing experience (with a minimum of one full electoral cycle, ideally a year in campaigning or similar experience) whether traditional or deep canvassing. You are intrinsically motivated to hit your goals independently and collectively. To be successful in this role, you will excel in five areas:

  • Empathetic Listening and Learning: You will bring a genuine curiosity and compassion to conversations with people with whom you disagree. In this role you will hear hateful and violent rhetoric both firsthand and in processing debriefs with fellow canvassers. You will learn to build trust through empathetic listening, deep mutual respect, and connecting emotionally. You will need to be able to listen to those who oppose LGBTQ+ equality and seek to understand so that, collectively, we can learn from them, move them, and apply that learning to move other voters.

  • Effective Communication to Create Meaningful Conversation: You are able to ask follow-up questions to drill down and help guide the conversation. This skill will encourage our neighbors/potential voters to share more details which in turn, helps create deeper, more meaningful conversation.

  • Commitment to Collective and Individual Goals: You’re able to effectively prioritize your time to help the team meet their collective goals. You will have a weekly target for conversations and you will contribute to the collective. Our priorities are persuasion and learning which means we are focused on empowering you to have quality, transformative conversations. You will provide the Regional Canvass Lead and Campaign Managers with feedback on what is/isn’t working in the field to help strengthen our program and assist with reaching our goals.

  • Data Collection and Hygiene: You will utilize OpenField and/or VAN to record door attempts, incomplete conversations, and completed conversations. It’s imperative that we track our results accurately and with detail to help collect data that will refine and align our efforts around shifting the narrative so that our policy, media, social media, and storytelling efforts are centered on what trans Missourians need to thrive.

  • Commitment to Equity: You demonstrate a strong commitment to equity for all LGBTQ+ persons and recognize how your own identities show up in your work. You embrace racial equity and center TGNC liberation based on an intersectional understanding of the experiences of our diverse constituency. You recognize we are not a monolithic community and see the challenges each of those groups face as you share stories and connect with neighbors and potential voters.

Knowledge of LGBTQ+ policy issues and prior experience in an advocacy environment are both assets but are not requirements.

If you were here right now, you would be:

  • Assisting with iterative feedback on script
  • Reviewing neighborhoods we will canvass and learning about your turf
  • Reviewing stories shared by PROMO’s team and the TGNC Advisory Board to strengthen your conversations
  • Completing and recording multiple deep canvass conversations with neighbors per shift
  • Debriefing difficult conversations and transformative conversations and providing best practices and feedback from your conversations to the team
  • Contributing to a culture of safety and self-care for the entire team by practicing safety best practices and supporting your regional canvass team
