Data Analyst, Michael Joseph

Do you love stories as much as you love data?

We’re looking for a curious and creative Data Analyst Exec to join Michael Joseph, the home of bestselling commercial fiction and non-fiction at Penguin Random House.

This is a varied and collaborative role that bridges data and creativity, helping our publishing, marketing and sales teams make smarter, more informed decisions. You’ll use data to uncover insights about readers, trends, and titles, which will shape our acquisition and marketing strategies, and explore new tools, including AI, to help us reach audiences more effectively.

You’ll be part of a team that values experimentation, collaboration and curiosity, someone who enjoys digging into numbers one minute and sharing big ideas the next.

Key responsibilities:

  • Using sales data, market trends, search behaviour and social listening insights to inform acquisition, marketing, and digital strategy.
  • Responding to ad-hoc requests for data and insight on key titles, authors, and campaigns, presenting findings in a clear, engaging way.
  • Working with metadata and the online sales team to improve how readers find and buy our books online, particularly on Amazon.
  • Coordinating the pre-publication metadata and AI sheet review process, ensuring titles are optimised for discoverability and consistency across all channels.
  • Monitoring emerging audience, platform, and content trends, from social media chatter to search spikes, to spot opportunities and shape campaigns.
  • Supporting the responsible use of AI and emerging digital tools, testing how innovative technologies can enhance creativity and efficiency.
  • Collaborating closely with marketing, comms, editorial and central data teams to share best practice and develop tools, dashboards and insights that drive real impact.

What you’ll bring

Essential criteria:

  • Experience working with data and insight to inform creative or commercial decisions, ideally within marketing, publishing, media or digital industries.
  • Confidence using tools such as Power BI, Excel, or similar platforms to analyse and visualise data.
  • A good understanding of SEO optimisation to improve online visibility and sales performance.
  • Familiarity with social listening or trend tools (e.g. Mention, TalkWalker, Brandwatch) and a keen eye for patterns and audience behaviour.
  • Curiosity about emerging technologies, including AI, and an enthusiasm for learning and experimenting with new tools.
  • Strong, confident communication skills with the ability to turn complex data into clear, compelling stories and share insights with creative teams.
  • A collaborative, proactive mindset and great attention to detail.

Disability Confident

As a Disability Confident Committed organisation, we offer interviews to candidates with a disability who meet the essential criteria for the role, and opt-in on their application form. The essential criteria for this role are listed as part of the ‘What you’ll bring’ section. There may be times when the volume of applications means we cannot take all eligible candidates to interview. We encourage you to tell us about any reasonable adjustments you may need by emailing [email protected]. Remember, you only need to share what you are comfortable with, for us to support your request.

Application instructions

Please apply with your CV and cover letter outlining why you are the right candidate for the role by 11:59pm on Sunday 2nd of December 2025.

As part of your cover letter, we’d like you to respond to the following question (no more than 300 words in total):

  • Tell us about a time you used data or insight to inform a creative idea, campaign, or decision. What did you learn and what impact did it have?

Salary

Circa, £31,000 dependent on how your skills and experience align to the role, plus bonus and benefits.
