The Center for Public Safety is seeking a candidate to provide critical support at the City's Firearms Range in support of qualification and training for Sworn Officers within the Agency. Range Masters perform intermediate technical work in the development, enforcement and administration of safety and training programs at the firing range; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Police Captain.

The Center for Public Safety is seeking a candidate to provide critical support at the City's Firearms Range in support of qualification and training for Sworn Officers within the Agency. Range Masters perform intermediate technical work in the development, enforcement and administration of safety and training programs at the firing range; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Police Captain.

This position is part-time working less than 1,000 hours per year.

Position Duties

Planning, coordinating and implementing fire arms training and safety programs,
ensuring safety regulations are followed; preparing and maintaining records and
files; preparing reports.

• Schedules and organizes the use of the firing range.
• Coordinates use with city police departments, county sheriff, state police, military
organizations, the community college and other organizations.
• Ensures compliance with all safety, liability insurance and EPA regulations.
• Maintains buildings and grounds at the range.
• Ensures that training aides and mechanical devices are operational.
• Monitors training exercises and range use.
• Purchases equipment and supplies.
• Recycles expended ammunition.
• Performs related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and 2 to 5 years’ experience in fire arms safety programs.

Certification through the NC Justice Academy as a Specialized Firearms Instructor preferred.

Other Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices relating to fire arms use, safety and
accident prevention; thorough knowledge of applicable Federal and State laws and regulations regarding fire arms ownership and use; thorough knowledge of the function and operation of firing range; ability to analyze working conditions and recommend alternative methods and procedures; ability to plan, develop and conduct training programs; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; firmness and tact in the enforcement of safety regulations.
