What will you be doing?

As a Compliance Specialist, you’ll be part of the Office of Ethics and Compliance (OEC) Audit team, supporting global validation assignments that ensure anti-bribery and corruption controls are effectively implemented. You’ll work closely with the Senior Compliance Specialist to plan and execute audits, review financial records, assess processes, conduct interviews, and help communicate findings to stakeholders. Your work will directly contribute to safeguarding Smith+Nephew’s reputation and ethical standards across markets and third-party entities.
You’ll also help develop corrective and preventative actions based on audit findings and confirm their implementation. Occasionally, you’ll collaborate on innovative projects to enhance compliance testing methods aligned with global regulations like the FCPA and UK Bribery Act.
  • Conduct global validations – The Compliance Specialist will support the including planning, fieldwork (transactional testing, document review and process assessments/interviews), reporting and corrective/preventative action (CAPAs) development- to provide assurance that anti-bribery and corruption controls have been effectively implemented in our global markets and in third party entities that do work on our behalf, such as distributors or vendors. 
  • Fieldwork Testing involves working with financial records, which may not be in English, from various systems; confirmation that transactions adhere to global and local standards; and ability to assess the severity of potentially non-compliant transactions. Reporting includes writing up the audit findings and making CAPA recommendations. Post fieldwork, the role will support the closure of CAPAs by confirming adequate evidence has been provided by stakeholders to prevent recurrence of failure.
  • Through testing, support the identification of inconsistencies or lack of clarity in anti-bribery and corruption controls and provide recommendations on how to improve these controls, including by identifying entity-level best practices and sharing them globally.
  • Work with Compliance Management on ad-hoc projects to develop new and innovative methods to test compliance with global anti-bribery laws, such as the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) or UK Bribery Act; medical device industry codes, such as MEDTECH or AdvaMed; and Smith & Nephew's global policies and procedures, particularly those focused on preventing bribery and corruption.
  • Assist in other departmental activities as determined by the department manager – 10%

What will you need to be successful?

Success in this role means being detail-oriented, collaborative, and confident in navigating complex compliance landscapes. You’ll need:
  • A degree-level qualification, with an advantage if you hold or are pursuing a professional audit certification (CPA, CIA or equivalent).
  • At least 2 years of experience in audit or monitoring roles within medical devices, pharmaceuticals, or public accounting.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, with the ability to write clear audit findings and manage multiple tasks under pressure.
  • Familiarity with anti-bribery frameworks and global compliance standards is a plus.
