Duties
Perform and monitor therapeutic apheresis procedures including plasma and red cell exchanges, leukodepletion, and whole blood phlebotomy.,Perform peripheral blood stem cell collections and other specialized collection procedures.,Interview and screen prospective patients/donors; apply FDA regulations, AABB standards, and adhere to regulations/standards of other governing bodies.,Perform physical examinations and secure detailed medical history of prospective patients/donors.,Assess patients’ responses to therapeutic apheresis making appropriate adjustments and modifications to the treatment plan as indicated by the appropriately credentialed physician.,Assess patients pre, during and post treatment to detect mild, moderate and severe Apheresis and non-Apheresis related complications, providing necessary emergency response.,Accurately document all pertinent treatment information in the patient’s record; track and document all unusual an/or adverse events following Occurrence Report procedures.,Set-up, monitor, and maintain Apheresis equipment, blood warmer and other equipment used for related procedures.,Operate all related equipment appropriately and safely and provides minor trouble shooting when necessary; efficiently utilize supplies to prevent waste.,Understand, conduct, and document appropriately Apheresis machine safety tests/alarms tests, equipment calibration, machine safety tests, functional testing, and internal and external disinfection on all machines.,Communicate directly with donors/patients and family members; Ensures adequate coverage of patient treatments and customer needs through appropriate scheduling.

Basic Requirement for Nurse (Apheresis): Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.). Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. Foreign Degree: Graduates of foreign nursing schools must have completed the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools Certification Program. The certification program consists of a credentials evaluation, the CGFNS Qualifying Exam, and evidence of passing one of the approved English Language Proficiency examinations. A copy of the CGFNS Certificate is required. Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Education/Experience: A diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program and possession of at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or above) which include providing nursing care to blood and apheresis platelet patients, administering medications, and providing patient or staff education. OR Education: A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field.
