POSITION TITLE: Assistant Director of Athletics
EXEMPTION STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Athletics
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months, 2025-2026 school year
Primary Purpose
Assist in managing the overall program of extracurricular and intramural athletics for the district. Work to provide each student with opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL) and local requirements.
Qualifications
Education/Certification
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university, preferred
Valid Texas teaching certificate with physical education endorsement
Special Knowledge/Skills
Knowledge of overall operations of an athletic program
Knowledge of state and University Interscholastic League (UIL) policies governing athletics
Ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures
Ability to manage budget and personnel, and coordinate district function
Strong communication (verbal and written), public relations, and interpersonal skills
Experience
Five years successful teaching and coaching experience
Major Responsibilities and Duties
Instructional and Program Management
- Assist in coordinating and managing district athletic program and facilities.
- Assist in establishing physical and academic eligibility requirements for participation in each sport and verify each athlete’s eligibility status.
- Assist in maintaining an active program that promotes good sportsmanship and student development.
- Help obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to gauge athletic program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responsive to student needs.
- Plan necessary time, resources and materials to support accomplishment of the department goals.
Athletic Events
- Attend and supervise at middle and high school athletic events.
- Assist in the preparation and approval of all interscholastic game schedules.
- Assist in securing transportation, lodging and meals for out of town athletic events.
- Assist in managing the district’s athletic operations by directing ticket sales, employing game officials, and ensuring preparation of facilities
- Aid in the oversight process of cleaning, repairing and storing all athletic equipment.
- Assist in coordination of the use of all athletic facilities by non-school groups.
- Assist to plan, organize and supervise all athletic awards programs.
Student Management
- Assist in implementing district student management policies, communicate expected student behavior related to athletics, and ensure enforcement of student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and student handbook.
- Assist to establish and maintain open lines of communication by conducting conferences on vital issues with parents, students and teachers.
Policy, Reports and Law
- Assist in implementing the policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education and UIL rules, and local policies in the area of athletics.
- Help compile, maintain, file and present all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, in a timely manner.
Communication and Community Relations
- Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.
- Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors and principals.
- Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
- Articulate the district’s mission and goals in the area of athletics to the community and solicit support.
- Demonstrate awareness of district and community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
- Demonstrate the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.
- Support athletic booster club activities
Professional Growth & Development
- Assist in the development of professional growth programs for coaches.
- Develop professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
- Maintain familiarity with district initiatives to better serve the needs of the students
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Assist in supervising and evaluating the performance of coaches, support staff and department secretaries.

- Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, computer, peripherals, electronic devices
- Posture: Prolonged sitting and/or standing, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, twisting, reaching
- Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, keyboarding, use of mouse, wrist flexion/extension
- Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance, 30-55 pounds with assistance, and more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistance
- Environment: Work is performed in an office setting along with frequent district wide and statewide travel; frequent irregular and/or prolonged hours
