ASSIGNMENT
This position is within the department of Head and Skin of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The appointment includes teaching, research and institutional and societal engagement.
Academic education
You lecture various course units in the discipline of "Translational neurosciences, analysis of (neuro)physiological signals, neuromodulation" within the programs of Biomedical Sciences (major in neurosciences), Medicine, Rehabilitation Sciences, Speech Language and Hearing Sciences, Psychology and Educational Sciences.
You supervise practical sessions and bachelor’s/master’s theses within the programs of Biomedical Sciences (major in neurosciences), Medicine, Rehabilitation Sciences, Speech Language and Hearing Sciences, Psychology and Educational Sciences. In addition you take part in interdisciplinary educational activities within other programs (such as Engineering and Biology).
You actively contribute to and participate in initiatives related to lifelong learning.
You are willing to take on more generic and coordinating teaching tasks within the faculty that go beyond your specific field of expertise.
Academic research
You will develop innovative and internationally recognized research in the field of neurosciences. This research should be highly translational in nature and, as far as possible, align with and complement the ongoing fundamental and clinical research within the department. You will ensure maximum integration of research and education.
Institutional and societal engagement
Based on your expertise and experience, you will contribute to the university's operations and/or take on external assignments.
You take part in the internal and external service provision of the department of Head and Skin, amongst others by translating the results of your research to the broader public.
During your career, you are willing to include roles and management positions that are relevant to the department and/or faculty.
PROFILE
- You have a strong academic CV with international visibility in the requested field:
- Your achievements in the field of research and education contribute to the development of the scientific domain of translational neurosciences (e.g. publications, presentations, or other academic output);
- You are capable to initiate and supervise educational and research projects and to acquire the necessary funding for this;
- You are didactically skilled to teach university students to develop academic competences;
- Mobility is recommended (e.g. education, research, economic, or societal);
- You have strong interdisciplinary skills, demonstrated by successful collaborations with physician-researchers and experts from other fields such as biology, pharmacology or engineering. You have shown leadership by integrating these disciplines into joint research projects. Thanks to your bridging role between clinical practice and fundamental research, you actively contribute to the development of research in cell and tissue therapy at Ghent University;
- You have an international network, as evidenced by your participation in consortia at bilateral and European/international level;
- You have experience with various presentations at prestigious foreign research institutions/conferences;
- The following are considered assets:
- Positively evaluated experience in providing and/or organizing teaching at an academic level;
- Teaching professionalization.
- Possessing a certification authorizing work with laboratory animals.
- You work in a collaborative way and integrate smoothly into the department/faculty. You look for opportunities inside and outside the university and actively use your network to do so.

- If you don't know Dutch/English, you are willing to learn it. This will be assessed during the selection interview. When taking up a teaching assignment, you must master the language of instruction of the course. More information about the language requirements and appropriate language guidance at Ghent University. The teaching assignments are conducted in Dutch and English.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
- We offer you a temporary appointment in a tenure track system for a term of five years. If positively evaluated by the University Board, the term of office will be transferred into a permanent appointment as an associate professor.
- Should you already be a member of the professorial staff or hold an equal post at a university or research institution, you can immediately be appointed as an assistant professor, without prejudice to the possibility of a temporary appointment.

SELECTION PROCEDURE
The selection committee will carry out an initial, substantive screening of the admissible applications on the file. This assessment takes into consideration both the candidate's merits and potential.
Ghent University emphasizes the qualitative assessment of academic performance. Therefore, candidates are asked in the application form to mention their most important academic or non-academic achievements with the most impact.
For shortlisted candidates, the following steps in the selection procedure shall consist of at least:
- a selection interview in which the vision and planning regarding education, research, and institutional and societal engagement as well as the embedding in the bigger picture are discussed
- a trial lesson on a subject in the relevant field
- a screening of leadership and interpersonal skills
- a vision and ambition document
- in the evaluation, the complementarity of expertise and the compatibility of the profile within the department and faculty play an important role
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
- You hold a thesis-based doctorate or a diploma or certificate that is recognized as equivalent in the field of neurosciences.
- You have at least two years of postdoctoral experience on 1 September 2026. This term of two years is determined by the date mentioned on the required diploma.
- Your application meets the formal requirements (submitted on time, complete: with a completed application form and a copy of the diploma, delivered via e-recruitment).
