ASSIGNMENT

 

This position is within the department of Human Structure and Repair of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The appointment includes teaching, research and societal outreach.

 

Profile text

 

Academic education

You will teach various courses in the field of histology in the bachelor's programmes of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, such as Biomedical Sciences, Dentistry, and Speech and Audiological Sciences.

 

You have extensive expertise in human histology and can integrate this knowledge with other basic disciplines (human anatomy, cell biology, cancer biology, molecular biology) and with applied courses (anatomical pathology).

 

In addition to subject-specific assignments, you will also take on more generic teaching assignments such as supervising major internships, master's theses and literature research, and other research-related teaching.

 

You will be actively involved in education policy and quality assurance, including participation in programme committees and other education support tasks.

 

You are willing to take on more generic and coordinating teaching tasks within the faculty that go beyond your specific field of expertise.

 

Academic research

You will develop innovative and internationally recognised research in the field of cell and tissue therapy. This research should be highly translational in nature and, as far as possible, align with and complement the ongoing fundamental and clinical research within the department and faculty. You will ensure maximum integration of research and education.

 

Institutional and societal engagement

Based on your expertise and experience, you will contribute to the university's operations and/or take on external assignments.

You take part in the internal and external services of the department of Human Structure and Repair, amongst others by translating the results of your research to the broader public.

During your career, you are willing to include roles and management positions that are relevant to the department and/or faculty.

 

PROFILE

 

  • You have a strong academic CV with international visibility in the requested field:
  • Your achievements in the field of research and education contribute to the development of the scientific domain (e.g. publications, presentations, or other academic output);
  • You are capable to initiate and supervise educational and research projects and to acquire the necessary funding for this;
  • You are didactically skilled to teach university students to develop academic competences;
  • Mobility is recommended (e.g. education, research, economic, or societal);
  • You have strong interdisciplinary skills, demonstrated by successful collaborations with physician-researchers and experts from other fields such as biology, chemistry and engineering. You have shown leadership by integrating these disciplines into joint research projects;
  • You serve as a bridge between clinical practice and fundamental research, actively contributing to the development of research in cell and tissue therapy at Ghent University;
  • You have an international network, as evidenced by your participation in consortia at bilateral and European/international level;
  • You have experience with various presentations at prestigious foreign research institutions/conferences.

 

  • You have demonstrable teaching experience and your previous research shows a clear substantive link with histology. Based on your expertise and motivation, you are able to incorporate basic education in histology into the faculty's bachelor's programmes in the short term.

 

  • You work in a collaborative way and integrate smoothly into the department/faculty. You look for opportunities inside and outside the university and actively use your network to do so.

  • You are able to teach in Dutch immediately. You are willing to learn English so that you are able to do so at CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) level C1 within three years of appointment. APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

 

  • We offer you a temporary appointment in a tenure track system for a term of five years. If positively evaluated by the University Board, the term of office will be transferred into a permanent appointment as an associate professor.

 

  • Should you already be a member of the professorial staff or hold an equal post at a university or research institution, you can immediately be appointed as an assistant professor, without prejudice to the possibility of a temporary appointment.

 

The recruitment is from 1 September 2026.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

 

The selection committee will carry out an initial, substantive screening of the admissible applications on the file. This assessment takes into consideration both the candidate's merits and potential.

 

Ghent University emphasizes the qualitative assessment of academic performance. Therefore, candidates are asked in the application form to mention their most important academic or non-academic achievements with the most impact.

 

For shortlisted candidates, the following steps in the selection procedure shall consist of at least:

  • a selection interview in which the vision and planning regarding education, research, and institutional and societal engagement as well as the embedding in the bigger picture are discussed
  • a trial lesson on a subject in the relevant field
  • a screening of leadership and interpersonal skills
  • a vision and ambition document
  • in the evaluation, the complementarity of expertise and the compatibility of the profile within the department and faculty play an important role

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

 

  • You hold a thesis-based doctorate or a diploma or certificate that is recognized as equivalent in the field of cell and tissue engineering.

 

  • You have at least two years of postdoctoral experience on 1 September 2026. This term of two years is determined by the date mentioned on the required diploma.

 

  • Your application meets the formal requirements (submitted on time, complete: with a completed application form and a copy of the diploma, delivered via e-recruitment).
