Steelmaking Coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world.
Dawson Mine is a large and dynamic open cut steelmaking coal mine operation made up of two operating pits - Central and South. It commenced operations in 1961 and is one of the oldest coal mining operations in Central Queensland with no signs of slowing down. Dawson Mine is rich in history, it was the first mine in Australia to export coal to Japan in 1961 and was the first mine to introduce draglines into its operation in 1963 – join the legacy today!
Job Description:We are currently seeking a driven and passionate Social Performance Specialist for our open-cut coal operation, Dawson Mine. This is the perfect opportunity for someone to implement the SMC Social Performance Standard and enhance the company’s social license to operate at Dawson Mine.
Based in the Moura Town Office, the Social Performance Specialist key outputs and accountabilities are:
- Maintain the Social Performance Governance system, including preparing and facilitating quarterly Dawson Social Performance Management meetings and monthly updates to the Dawson Senior Leadership Team.
- Ensure all baseline documents (internal context, external context, area of influence and vulnerability/resilience assessment) are current.
- Implement the 2022 – 2026 Dawson Social Management Plan and associated plans such as Dawson Stakeholder Engagement Plan, Socio-Economic Development Plan, Community Health and Safety Plan and Emergency Response Plan for site induced emergency with off-site impacts.
- Undertake engagements to develop 2027 – 2032 Dawson Social Management Plan and implement the Plan once finalized.
- Prepare for and facilitate quarterly Dawson Community Reference Forum Meetings.
- Undertake monitoring and evaluation required to identify whether Dawson Mine is on track to meet the long-term social performance objectives outlined in the 2022 – 2026 Dawson Social Management Plan.
- Maintain and update the Dawson Mine Social Human Rights Impact and Risk Analysis (SHIRA).
- Implement the Dawson Grievance Procedure.
- Maintain the Dawson Mine Commitments Register.
- Other requirements as assigned by your Manager.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Graduate qualification in environmental science, sociology or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in Social Performance & Sustainability within the mining sector (preferably coal).
- Certificate of Engagement from IAP2 (preferred).
- Completion of the IAIA SIA training or some form of SIA training (preferred).
- Experience with social performance management systems and frameworks.
- Resilient nature, openness for change and demonstrated ability to drive best practice.
Your ability in stakeholder engagement, grievance management, capabilities in reporting, program management (project and budgets), and deliver business value from social performance activities will be key to your success in the role.
