Location: 2855 Gramercy St. Houston, TX 77025
Position Summary: Performs and participates in decontamination, cleaning, assembling, packaging, sterilization, storage and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment. Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Essential Duties:
- Performs according to compliance and other policies and procedures.
- Follows all manufacturers’ guidelines regarding handling and processing of instruments and equipment.
- Demonstrates care and handling of surgical instruments per HEA Surgery Center policy.
- Routine tests of autoclaves, sterilizers, and washers will be run by the Technician. Will assure routine cleaning and maintenance is done. Assure sterilization records are maintained appropriately.
- Responds promptly to changes in workload, adjusting assignments as necessary to achieve optimal productivity and efficiency. Plans all work steps to ensure success: considers time, supplies and support required from other individuals and departments in setting up work plan and completing duties.
- Responds to problem calls from the Operating Room and performs preliminary investigation. Determines priority level of instrumentation and equipment requests and other surgery center needs. Directs services in a competent and professional manner while assuring OR priorities are completed in a timely manner.
- Seeks educational opportunities and accepts responsibilities for own professional growth and development.
- Participates with in-service opportunities and staff meetings.
- Must maintain patient right to privacy by not discussing privileged information outside the work area or within hearing range of visitors, family, or patient.
- Keeps all working areas clean, neat and stocked.
- Follows all safety rules while on the job. Reports all accidents and corrects minor safety hazards. Communicates with peers and management regarding any hazards identified in the workplace.
- Demonstrates knowledge of AAMI/AORN standards for sterile processing practices.
- Maintains a clean and safe environment by adhering to Standard Precautions and Infection Control practices. Staff will don proper Personnel Protective equipment (PPE), follows protocols for decontamination process referencing Instructions for Use (IFU) supplied by the manufacturers.
- Identifies instruments for all specialties and assures proper function. Follows protocol for repair or replacement of instruments that are not functioning properly. Assembles and packages all instrumentation and sets according to department protocol. Utilizes equipment according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and surgery center policy.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High School diploma or GED certificate.
- Sterile Processing technician training (required) / certification from CBSPD or IAHCSMM (required, within one year of employment).
- One or more years of related work experience in the sterile processing field required.
