Job Summary
The Respiratory Care Assistant works under the direct supervision of licensed respiratory professionals and supports essential departmental operations. Key responsibilities include reprocessing respiratory equipment, maintaining supply inventory, and monitoring patients using basic oxygen devices. As the assistant advances in their education, they may also perform more complex respiratory care tasks under supervision. Additional duties may be assigned by the respiratory care manager or their designee.
Key Responsibilities:

Manage respiratory equipment, ensuring it is clean, functional, and ready for use; coordinate maintenance and report malfunctions to the respiratory department.

Clean, sanitize, and document maintenance of equipment and work areas.

Maintain inventory of supplies, restock as needed, and report items requiring reorder; ensure supplies are not expired.

Transport respiratory equipment and assist with patient transport.

Assist nursing and medical staff with respiratory care procedures and the introduction of respiratory care modalities.

Obtain and administer medications, incentive spirometry, and aerosol therapy under appropriate supervision.

Set up oxygen delivery devices; perform basic breathing exercises, postural drainage techniques, CPR support procedures, and pulse oximetry.

Conduct oxygen rounds and ensure proper oxygen delivery to patients.

Perform calibration and quality control on arterial blood gas analyzers.

Maintain departmental records, including service charges, and ensure all patient documentation is current.

Assist with patient education in rehabilitation settings.

After documented training and competency, perform EKGs as needed
Qualifications
Required: Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
Required: BLS (CPR) certified through AHA within 90 days of employment.
