About the Department
Position Duties
- Checks library materials in and out, and enters transaction records into a computer data base using a keyboard or scanner;
- Explains library card rules to library users, inspects users' identification, and issues library cards;
- Retrieves information from a computer and notifies library users of overdue and lost books;
- Calculates and collects library charges from library users;
- Answers library users' policy questions regarding overdue materials, reserving material and related policies;
- Refers library users requiring professional assistance to the appropriate staff;
- Sorts, separates, arranges, files or distributes incoming products or material
- Electronically catalogs and classifies library books and audio/visual materials;
- Assists in maintaining the accuracy of the online catalog;
- Catalogs library items, adds or deletes items to library database;
- Prepares library materials for circulation by attaching labels, pockets, and plastic jackets;
- Delivers mail to other County departments and deposits funds in bank;
- Troubleshoots computer software and hardware problems in a Windows based environment.
- Assist patrons with searches, computer and equipment use;
- Accepts patrons' printing payments, makes change and balance cash drawer with daily receipts;
- Assists in maintaining periodicals collection, including checking in, shelving and minor repair;
- Sorts items for re-shelving and shelves them;
- Maintains organization and neatness of department, including tending to the copy machine as needed, repairing damaged items, clearing desks and tables and straightening the shelves;
- Sorts, shelves, and files various library material accurately according to library classification systems (alphabetic, numeric, and alphanumeric);
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
- Works a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
- Regular and timely attendance is required.
Minimum Qualifications
Requires high school graduation or its equivalent or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Other Qualifications
Need to have the ability to calculate solutions to basic mathematical problems, accurately sort alphabetically and numerically at a reasonable speed. Should have the ability to perform duties and responsibilities independently, as well as understand and follow instructions both orally and in writing. Must be able to work standard office equipment and programs including the library's automated system, computer, printer, and fax machine. Must have the skills required to learn job-related material through oral instruction, observation, as well as comprehend and make inferences from written material. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, other departments, and the public. Must be able to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.
