About the Department

Position Duties
- Perform periodic and follow-up inspections of existing buildings, structures, and fire equipment installations; contact the responsible parties in person and in writing; and perform follow-up inspections to see what remedial action has been taken as directed.
- Perform and participate in fire and life safety surveys and examinations of commercial, industrial, and residential properties; locate and identify existing or potential fire and life safety problems; recommend and require appropriate fire prevention/safety measures and devices, including correcting hazardous conditions, and reporting irregular or suspicious circumstances to police and other departments; plan fire escape routes and promotes the installation of built-in fire protection equipment.
- Perform and participate in field inspections of commercial, industrial, and residential properties, to determine the existence, condition, usage, and operational adequacy of proper fire detection and suppression systems; secure cooperation of property owners/tenants and advise on corrective action to eliminate life safety hazards and fire hazard conditions.
- Perform fire and life safety compliance inspections of tradeshows, indoor and outdoor special events, concerts, and parades.
- Prepare correspondence, documents, and reports; communicate with other city, county, and state fire prevention officials; request, with supervisor's approval, assistance from other departments and outside agencies as necessary; assist in the distribution of pamphlets, brochures, and other public information material; collect, compile, and tabulate information and data.
- Survey commercial, industrial, and residential properties for code compliance; prepare occupancy reports and letters regarding related ordinance and code violations; assist in the preparation of graphs and charts for analytical study.
- Ensure compliance of city ordinances, state laws, and other regulatory codes under the fire department jurisdiction; re-inspect occupancies to determine progress toward compliance with codes and laws.
- Research, compile, and prepare oral and written reports.
- Issue permits and collect fees; issue citations, warnings, and correction notices.
- Conduct fire department public education presentations to schools, civic organizations, businesses, and municipal employees.
- Prepare fire and life safety literature for widespread distribution to the media, business community, and the general public.
- Provide assistance and information to the public; answer telephone and counter inquiries; explain fire prevention practices and policies.
- Attend training, classes, seminars, and meetings as assigned.
- Use computer systems for data management, presentations, and materials.
- Assist the Fire Marshal with fire and life safety standby at large events and gatherings.
- May participate in permit inspections and other inspection programs.
- Perform related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
- Two (2) years of experience in fire service, building trades, code enforcement, or a related field is required.
- Experience in fire prevention including conducting inspections, plan checking, fire protection, and extinguishing systems is preferred.
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
- Supplemental college-level courses in Fundamentals of Fire Prevention, Fire Protection, Fire Protection Equipment and Systems, or closely related coursework are preferred.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid Class C driver license with a satisfactory driving record (a driving record may be deemed unsatisfactory for any of the following reasons: three or more moving violations or reportable accident within the last three years; conviction of driving under the influence within the last five years) is required.
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain, International Code Council Fire Inspector I Certification within twelve months of appointment is required.
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a Fire Inspector I Certificate issued by the California Office of the State Fire Marshal within 24 months of appointment is required.
- Possession or ability to obtain PC832 (A) Certification within 12 months of appointment is preferred.
- Possession of Fire Inspector 2A, 2B, 2C and 2D, Plans Examiner 1A, 1B and 1C Certifications are preferred.
- Incumbents are enrolled in the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice Program. The DMV Pull Notice Program provides information on the incumbent's driving record and driving record status on a periodic basis to the City.
- Must successfully complete a public safety pre-employment background investigation, physical, and drug screen.
