The Risk Management Officer (RMO) serves as an independent, risk professional responsible for assessing, monitoring, and reporting on the bank’s loan, credit and operational risk exposures and developing and implementing a comprehensive enterprise risk management framework that enables proactive risk identification and strategic decision-making. This position evaluates the loan portfolio, assigns and validates risk ratings, reviews internal controls and monitoring reports, and ensures that risk management practices are aligned with regulatory expectations and internal policies. The RMO also supports management by assessing policies and procedures, assisting with enterprise risk management, including management of audit-related activities, and helping to strengthen the bank’s overall risk culture through training and advisory support.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Review the performance and risk profile of the bank’s loan portfolio.
- Identify trends, concentrations, and emerging risks and recommend mitigating actions.
- While assessing risk, they will assign and validate borrower and portfolio-level risk ratings.
- Independently review complex or high-risk credits for accuracy and consistency with policy.
- Evaluate internal control reports, loan review findings, and exception reports.
- Monitor adherence to credit and risk management policies and escalate material issues.
- Perform detailed financial and collateral analyses for complex lending relationships.
- Support management in assessing credit quality, capital adequacy, and loan loss exposure.
- Review and assess risk-related policies, procedures, and processes for adequacy and effectiveness.
- Recommend enhancements to align with best practices and regulatory expectations.
- Develop and deliver risk training to lending staff and management on credit analysis, documentation standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Act as a resource on risk management principles and policy interpretation.
- Oversee the identification and remediation of control deficiencies, conduct quality control reviews, develop solutions to strengthen controls, and oversee corrective actions to aid management decisions and mitigate operational and regulatory risks. Stay current on banking laws, regulations, and guidance impacting risk management.
- Prepare concise and accurate reports for management and Board committees summarizing key risk trends and portfolio performance.
- Engage with Risk Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) such as BSA/AML, Compliance, Information Security, Technology, Third Party Risk, and Fraud to validate risks and controls associated with Divisions’ activities.
- Develop, plan, and oversee all phases of loan review and internal audit activities, to include but not limited to, planning, issue and process management, reporting, and continuous monitoring.
- Support the Chief Risk Officer with the development, implementation, and management of the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Framework in order to establish an effective risk-based system to identify, measure, monitor, and control enterprise-wide risks.
- Other duties and responsibilities, as assigned, to support the company’s mission and strategic objectives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or a related discipline.
(Advanced degree or certification such as CRC, FRM, or CPA preferred.) - 5+ years of progressive experience in bank risk management, credit analysis, or loan review required.
- Familiarity with relevant banking regulations (e.g., SOX, OCC, FDIC) and control frameworks preferred.
- Exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and relevant risk management or loan review software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex information clearly.
- High degree of independence, integrity, and attention to detail.
- Must have the ability to work in a team environment and effectively communicate and collaborate with coworkers in a positive manner.
Working Conditions
- Office environment with flexibility to work remotely, but may have infrequent occasion to work outdoors
- 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday
- May work extended hours occasionally when needed.
- Offsite training or conferences may be necessary, with the possibility of overnight travel.
