The City of Asheville Youth Leadership Academy is committed to providing its students with a meaningful summer work experience, leadership development through seminars and community service, and college preparatory activities, including year-long academic support. 

About our Opportunity:

The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of CAYLA Program Assistant  in the Community and Economic Development department. This is a temporary position which will assist the City of Asheville in delivering the CAYLA Internship Program to local participants.

What you’ll be doing: 

  • Assist Director with planning, development, and implementation of the program to ensure quality educational experiences for CAYLA students and CAYLA site supervisors.

  • Serve as an educational and personal resource to students throughout the summer.

  • Work closely with the Director to develop Friday workshop curricula and ensure student attendance, participation, and success.

  • Facilitate activities during Friday workshops & field trips. 

  • Help plan and coordinate community service programs.

  • Organize and maintain files (paper and computer files) for students and alumni.

  • Communicate with each student to monitor progress and report any issues back to the Director.

  • Maintain Attendance database.

  • Advise students on academic options for high school.

  • Assist Director with the placement and matching of summer internship sites for the students. 

  • Assists with organizing and planning senior group sessions during the academic year.



About you:

We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements will be considered:
  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Prior participation in the CAYLA program preferred

  • Ability to work in many different environments and communities with people from diverse backgrounds (ethnic, socio-economic, educational, professional, generational)

  • Excellent writing and communication skills

  • Must have transportation and be able to run errands during the day (or evening hours) 

  • Proven management, organizational, and leadership skills, plus the ability to initiate and follow through on ideas and projects  

  • A strong sense of purpose and vision for expanding educational opportunities for youth

Other things to know:  
- The position is part-time (approximately 40 hours per week, for 9 weeks) and pays $17.70/hour. 
- Must be available to start the week of May 26, and work the entire CAYLA program, June 9 - July 31.
