Savannah River National Laboratory is seeking an Radiological Protection Inspector to join our team. The selected individual will provide full and independent workplace guidance and monitoring of all site activities involving radioactive materials.
Responsibilities
- Perform radiological control functions using instrumentation to detect and measure radiological conditions; frequently under poor field conditions, such as inadequate lighting and ventilation, and extreme temperatures.
- Work may involve climbing ladders and scaffolds, walking up/down several flights of stairs, and prolonged standing and walking.
- Conduct contamination and radiation surveys associated with radioactive material movements and transfers on-site, shipments off-site, and receipts from off-site.
- Conduct conditional and unconditional material release surveys.
- Use radioactivity sampling media such as disc smears, filter papers, and planchets.
- Perform routine observations and monitoring of radiologically controlled areas to verify there is no migration of contamination and that radiological controls, including postings, are adequate.
- Document all survey results.
- Recommend protective clothing and respiratory equipment requirements.
- Interpret monitoring instruments to calculate rates, dose, airborne radioactivity concentration and environmental release.
- Issue appropriate dosimeters.
- Check monitoring equipment to ensure proper operations.
- Audit personnel access into radiologically controlled areas.
- Provide technical guidance to management, less experienced personnel and employees performing work.
- Post radiological work areas with appropriate signs and barricades.
- Prepare air, water, soil, and surface smear samples and count activity in accordance with established procedures.
- Work from site policies, procedures, based off of experience and training with minimal guidance and instruction from supervision.
- Exercise radiological stop-work authority, if needed, when radiological conditions have changed or unforeseen hazards are encountered.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- HS (or Equiv) 4+ yrs of experience.
- Must have completed ACT WorkKeys Skills Assessment and achieved the minimum scores: Workplace Observation=3, Locating Information =4 (Graphic Literacy), and Reading for Information =4 (Workplace Documents). Official results must be uploaded as a file attachment at the time the application is submitted online. Test scores must be within the last five years.
- Official documentation must be provided to the company for consideration of employment.
- Work may involve climbing ladders and scaffolds, walking up/down several flights of stairs, and prolonged standing and walking.
- Work may involve lifting up to 25lbs
Preferred Qualifications:
- Preferred Previous Radiological Protection Experience of 15 years
