The Department of Biology seeks a broadly trained organismal biologist who identifies as a teacher-scholar with demonstrated excellence in innovative undergraduate teaching and mentoring. This position is a full-time, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Biology, beginning August 2026. The successful candidate will contribute to curricular design and assessment, teach undergraduate courses, advise and mentor undergraduate students, be team-oriented, develop a research program that emphasizes undergraduate mentorship, and foster an inclusive and equitable classroom and work environment. The position will be open until filled, with application review beginning in December.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Teaching responsibilities include a 200-level zoology course, a 100-level introductory environmental biology course, and the possibility of teaching an upper-level elective in their expertise area. Other teaching responsibilities will depend on the candidate’s area of expertise and departmental needs.

  • Teaching load consists of a 4/4 schedule, or 12 contact hours a semester. For example, a faculty member might teach 2 lecture sections and 2 lab sections during a semester.

  • Our scholarship program is considered an extension of teaching, and it is expected to have an active scholarly program that includes undergraduate researchers. This should involve regular participation in scientific conferences and occasional peer-reviewed publications within the discipline.

  • Involvement in University committees as assigned by the Faculty Governance Structure, as well as service to the profession and the Biology department.

  • Use of best practices in curriculum development and assessment, including the implementation of student-centered and evidence-based teaching practices such as active learning or Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs).

  • Mentoring and advising a diverse population of students.

  • Regular, predictable attendance on campus.

  • Alignment with the University's mission, vision, and strategic roadmap.

  • Other job duties/responsibilities may be assigned.

 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • A commitment to serving diverse, first-generation, non-traditional, and socio-economically challenged students.

  • A willingness to work individually and in groups to support success in matriculation and persistence in the program.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in Biology, Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, or a closely related field.

  • Teaching experience, especially university-level research methods, is preferred.
