Job Summary:
The Registered Nurse Pre-Procedure Scheduler/Collaborator is a professional practitioner who provides quality patient care and is responsible for daily coordination of surgical procedures and patient education for Surgical Services patients, in accordance with the mission, vision and values of the organization.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Functions within the scope of practice as defined by respective certification/license
- Coordinate and communicate with physicians/providers and patients to schedule surgeries/procedures and pre-operative testing. This will include all Archview patients.
- Schedule surgeries/procedures in coordination with clinic and physician office scheduler and tracks the status of surgeries/procedures, to include coordination of all documents and pre surgical requirements for surgical patients.
- Schedule patients for surgery, tests, medical and cardiac clearance, pre-op tests and patient education.
- Oversee completion of required testing/paperwork/documentation needed for surgical procedures.
- Organize patient chart and checking to see all documents required for surgery/procedure are complete.
- Confirm all pre-operative testing is complete.
- Document appropriate medical information and telephonic information in EMR.
- Educate patients and their caregivers regarding specific care related to surgery/procedure as instructed by the physician/provider essential to an efficient and safe surgical procedure.
- Confirm all providers have collected and reviewed all mandatory tests for procedure.
- Schedule patients for pre-op and medical/surgical procedures.
- Maintain complete patient medical record information in the medical record while confirming that all necessary data is in place before patient procedure/surgery is scheduled.
- Perform voice mail/email/EHR (electronic health record) retrieval throughout the day.
- Communicate procedure/surgical information and patient instructions appropriately and in a timely manner to patients and/or patient family members.
- Obtain appropriate physician orders for procedures/surgeries/testing and pre-procedure medications.
- Review physician/providers last note and checks directives for special scheduling instructions.
- Maintain coordination between provider’s offices/Archview and surgical team.
- Collaborate with providers to complete scheduling process, changes with patient or issues/concerns with scheduling surgery/procedure if needed.
- Contact patient regarding surgery/procedures.
- Acts as liaison to communicate surgery/procedure information to referring providers, clinic providers and staff through EMR and verbal communication.
- Document all communication in EMR.
- Be the point of contact for patient throughout surgery/procedure scheduling process.
- Facilitate patient access to healthcare to reduce gaps and services by promoting continuity of care.
- Support staff members and healthcare providers.
- Perform 72 hour and 24 hour pre-surgical calls to patients to assure patients’ attendance of scheduled procedures.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years medical procedure scheduling and/or surgery background preferred
Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations
- Current RN Illinois State licensure required. Maintains regulatory requirements.
- ACLS Certified required
- PALS Certified required
- CPR/BLS certified required
Skills and Abilities
- Computer literate. Computer literacy content focuses on computer basics and the use of generic software applications such as word processing, presentation software, and the use of electronic communication such as email. Knowledge and use of EHR (electronic health record).
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) (mask, gown, gloves) when required.
- Sit or stand for a prolonged period of time.
- This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as desktop computers, fax, photocopiers, projectors, scanners etc.
- Able to lift 25 pounds from floor to waist using proper body mechanics.
- Required in positioning and moving supplies and equipment. Pushing required performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Moderate twisting, bending, stooping, kneeling and reaching. Motor coordination and manual dexterity. Able to use one or both hands for grasping, pushing/pulling and fine maculation to perform procedures. Able to accurately read information and data on a computer screen as well ad written communication.
- Ability to adapt to continually changing environment. Able to accept constructive criticism and accept own limits. Emotional and mental stability needed to maintain a therapeutic relationship with clients, families and health team members.
FLSA Statement:
This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Employees in non-exempt positions are entitled to receive overtime pay for any hours worked over 40 in a workweek in accordance with state and federal regulations.
