The newly formed Department of Engineering at Butler University is seeking an innovative educator and strategic leader to serve as the Lecturer of Engineering Practice & Director of Industry Engagement and Professional Development. This full-time faculty-administrator hybrid role supports the academic mission of the college while advancing its external engagement initiatives. The anticipated start date for the position is August 2026. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. 

Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching that promotes inclusive and equity-minded learning environments for an increasingly diverse student population. Engineering faculty members foster student learning through student-centered pedagogy, inclusive practices, entrepreneurial projects, and hands-on design.  

A strong background in engineering education or a closely related field is required, with teaching and administrative interests in general, practice-oriented engineering courses. Teaching responsibilities will include foundational and upper-division courses in the appropriate area. Administrative responsibilities will include industry outreach, aligning curriculum with industry needs, and developing strong pathways for student success through student and professional societies. Teaching and Director roles will be split evenly. Total teaching load will be approximately twelve credits per year.  

Job Duties: 

  • Teaching responsibilities will include introductory and advanced general engineering lectures. Total teaching load will be approximately 12 credit hours per year.  
  • Developing and delivering the Engineering Program's sequence of practice-oriented, general engineering courses. 
  • Developing interdisciplinary engineering courses to explore engineering ethics, global impact, and leadership development and incorporate the Indianapolis Community Requirement (ICR). 
  • Aligning the curriculum with evolving industry needs, and lead strategic initiatives in engineering practice, industry partnerships, and experiential learning. Design experiential education opportunities through co-ops, internships, externships, and undergraduate research experiences. Support professional placements and career development programming. Ensure integration of professional development experiences into the curriculum.  
  • Developing strong pathways for student success. The role includes first-year advising and active mentorship of engineering student organizations for campus and nationally recognized groups such as SWE, NSBE, SHPE, and discipline-specific societies like ASME, BMES, and AIChE.  
  • Serving as a key liaison to external stakeholders including industry professionals, alumni (especially those affiliated with Butler’s former? Engineering Dual Degree Program), professional organizations (ASEE, NACADA, etc.), and community partners.  

Required Qualifications: 

  • A master’s degree or higher in any engineering or related field. 
  • A strong background in Engineering Education.   
  • A proven record of industry collaboration, or administrative leadership, and a commitment to inclusive, student-centered success. 
  • A forward-thinking approach to curriculum, community partnerships, and career readiness. 
  • A strategy for effective teaching and/or mentoring undergraduate students with a variety of backgrounds, identities, and experiences. 
  • Evidence of engaging teaching at the undergraduate level.
