About the Department
Alabama State University, Physical Plant, invites applications for the position of HVAC Technician. Under general supervision, the candidate selected will install, maintain, service and repair mechanical equipment and appliances used to supply heat, condition air, refrigerate, chill water, ice and related utilities to University buildings and facilities. This position reports to the Heating and Air Conditioning Supervisor.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Installs, services and repairs centrifugal and reciprocating air conditioning units ranging from ¾ ton to 175 ton capacity
- Determines causes of malfunctions in heating and air conditioning units by utilizing knowledge of mechanical and electrical theory associated with heating and air conditioning systems
- Injects prescribed gases into compressors, dismantles hearing and air conditioning systems for inspection and repairs, replaces parts, overhaul compressors and condensers, installs extension and discharge valves, and services evaporator units
- Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on ice makers, ovens, coolers, refrigerators, air compressors, pumps, stem ovens, and window air conditioners
- Requisitions parts and material required for service, repair or overhaul of mechanical equipment
- Fabricates, assembles and install ductwork using metalworking tools and welding equipment
- Cuts and bends tubing to correct length using cutting and bending equipment, and cuts and threads pipe using machine and/or hand threading equipment
- Assists Heating and Air Conditioning Apprentice with on the job training and perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED, certificate in Heating and Air Conditioning Technology, and 3 years of experience repairing heating and air conditioning systems, and have a valid driver license with an insurable driving record are required.
