Performs skilled transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records, ordering of signs and materials, and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Essential Duties:
District Sign Tech II
Orders supplies and materials from district shop.
Orders signs from the regional sign shop.
Conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective pavement markers (RPMs).
Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs.
Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency situations/conditions.
Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
Measures and calculates amount of materials needed.
Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other items related to these duties.
Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs.
Performs and maintains inventory of signs.
Performs preventive maintenance on sign truck.
Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and other departmental guidance.
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Additional essential duties for District Sign Tech III include:
May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
Trains other technicians on sign installation and safety procedure

Minimum Qualifications:
Experience:
(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
District Sign Tech II
1 year in sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.
District Sign Tech III
2 years in sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
District Sign Tech II-III
Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License at the time of application. Must have an "N" Endorsement or obtain an "N" Endorsement within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

- This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.

Required to respond on nights, weekends and holidays in emergency situations.

- Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
