Position Title: Educational Interpreter for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Classification: Related Service Provider, Certified (NIC) or Qualified (EIPA)
Department: Special Education
Reports to: Lead Interpreter, Director of Special Services & Related Services Coordinator

Performance Supervisor & Accountability: Supervised and evaluated by an interpreter who is trained in evaluating interpreter skills and is knowledgeable regarding best practices for interpreting in
educational settings.

Summary: The educational interpreter’s primary function is to provide interpreting services to studentswho are d/Deaf and hard of hearing, their classmates, the educational faculty and staff, and others
involved in the education setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide high quality interpreting services for students who are d/Deaf and hard of hearing, their classmates, the educational faculty and staff, and others involved in the education setting.
Provide high quality interpreting for other activities during the regularly scheduled school day as needed.
Participates in educational team meetings, including the development and review of progress on the Individualized Education Program IEP, providing insight on the success of communication strategies, language development and use of interpreting services
Assists in providing pertinent information in connection to deafness and the interpreting process to hearing students, teachers and other staff members.
Provides initial training regarding the use of an interpreter in educational settings at the beginning of the school year to all faculty and staff that will be teaching the d/DHH student and working with the interpreter
Under the guidance and direction of the Lead Interpreter, provides ongoing teacher training and consultation regarding the interpreting process
Works with the DHH student in small groups or individuals to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
Reinforce language and developmental ASL skills for students experiencing language delays as directed in the IEP and guided by the TODHH/Lead Interpreter.
Adjust interpreting to meet the unique needs of the individual student as directed in the IEP and guided by the TODHH/Lead Interpreter.
Maintains confidentiality concerning students and students’ records and data.
Accepts responsibility for developing and maintaining a relevant professional development plan, seeking a qualified mentor as necessary
Seeks out professional development opportunities that are relevant to the interpreting process, educational system, educational law, and current best practices to equal a minimum of 60 hours every 5 years
Meets professional development requirements as outlines by applicable state/or local education agencies
Participate in a quarterly observation/feedback process with the Lead Educational Interpreter
Seeks out mentoring and professional development opportunities in response to appropriate feedback provided by qualified supervisors
Adheres to Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct
Adheres to national, state and local requirements regarding Educational Interpreter standards of professional practice, codes of professional conduct and best practices
Actively advocates for the profession
Seeks accountability for the profession
Perform other duties as requested within the scope of responsibilities of an EI

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Academic Credentials/Qualifications:

Completion of a 4-year degree in interpreting program (IP)
Specialized training in educational interpreting with demonstrated knowledge in the areas:
- Educational Theory
- Child and language development
- Roles and responsibilities in the educational environment
- Ethical and professional practices within an educational setting
- State and federal laws related to special education and deaf education
- Completion of a supervised internship or practicum placement in an educational setting

Pre-service Education/Qualification:

Supervised internship in an educational setting

Professional Credentials/Qualifications:

Minimum 4.0 on the EIPA Skills Assessment or National Interpreter Certification (NIC)
EIPA Written Knowledge Assessment – Passed
Current membership in the state and/or national interpreting organizations

Language Skills:

Fluency in English and American Sign Language (ASL)
Ability to interpret using other sign language methods such as MCE, PSE, CASE based on individual student needs

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
