Duties and Responsibilities 

(NOTE: ** denotes Essential Functions)

  • **Promotes, designs and leads the Office of Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) technology development programs. Researches and applies methods for program improvements.
  • **Designs and delivers educational content and training to program participants.
  • **Plans, coordinates, executes program activities and events. Addresses any issues and assures the quality of all activities and manages small teams effectively.
  • **Develops procedures, program timelines and goals. Advises and mentors program participants. Manages multiple programs, consultants and contractors.
  • **Communicates effectively at a technical level with UH researchers, technical experts and business partners.
  • **Engages, supports, and builds relationships with UH faculty, researchers, staff, students and external partners and stakeholders to encourage participation in activities and programs, including individual and unit-based outreach activities.
  • **Identifies funding opportunities to support OIC and OVPRI programs. Prepares and drafts grant proposals and ensures grant outcomes are met.
  • **Serves as liaison and resource for stakeholders.
  • **Research and identify organizations and businesses for potential partnerships.
  • **Provides information and assistance to faculty, researchers, staff and students regarding UH, OVPRI, and programs, policies, and processes.
  • ** Participates in team-based workflow processes for situational awareness, decision-making and cross-training.
  • ** Maintains business records and work products in repositories and databases to inventory and track the status and disposition of UH projects, programs and assets and to keep abreast of relevant deadlines.
  • Assists with preparing and presenting informational content that promotes OVPRI services and programs, and assists with and attends OVPRI events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Professional Work Experience:
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Business, Business Administration, Science, Engineering, Education (including adult education) or related field and 5 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for program management, planning and hosting events, or developing and implementing innovation and entrepreneurial programming; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of Program/ Project Management as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with federal grant programs and their funding sources.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, spreadsheet software, and database software.
  • If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
Supplemental Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple tasks, and to complete tasks on time and with attention to detail.
  • Experience working with faculty, researchers and students in academic settings.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Master’s or higher degree(s) in Engineering, Computer Science, Physical Science, Life Science, Medicine, or Education (including adult education)
  • At least 2 years of experience in developing grant proposals and meeting grant outcomes.
  • At least 3 years of experience working in startup, venture capital and/or entrepreneurship ecosystems.
  • Experience in curriculum development and/or strategic planning.
  • Professional experience in several of : intellectual property (including patents, copyrights and trademarks), licensing, business formation and incorporation, entrepreneurship, product development, and/or grant writing.
  • Working knowledge of the innovation and business ecosystems around the University of Hawai‘i and the State of Hawai‘i.
  • Ability to understand new technologies at the conceptual level to envision potential commercial uses and appreciate any competitive advantage(s) over existing solutions.
  • Considerable working understanding of the Lean Methodology, Business Model Canvas, and other startup frameworks. Able to design and hold workshop(s) with business startups.
