About the Department
This classification performs manual work in the operation and maintenance of the Animal Shelter for the City of Alexandria. Work is performed under the supervision of the Crew Leader, Animal Control and Superintendent, Animal Control and is subject to a rotating weekend shift.
Position Duties
Cleans and disinfects kennels, cages, bowls, and related equipment.
Feeds, waters, and exercises animals daily, or more often as needed; bathes and dips as needed.
Handles, tags, and moves animals within the shelter; maintains accurate location records.
Identifies injuries and illnesses, reports condition, isolates to prevent exposure to well animals, and administers medications as directed.
Restrains animals; assists the veterinarian and other personnel during exams, evaluations, and vaccinations.
Assists visitors in adopting, reclaiming, and impounding by loading, unloading, and showing animals.
Cleans, disinfects, and maintains the facility’s buildings, including removing trash.
Maintains grounds by mowing grass, trimming fence lines, and picking up litter.
Supports and assists Animal Control Officers in performing their duties.
Assists with euthanasia of animals, proper disposal, and documentation, per state regulations; performs euthanasia if certified. Performs private cremations of animal remains and maintains appropriate records.
Assists with the inventory of supplies and reports needed supplies to the supervisor.
Occasionally operates a city vehicle to pick up supplies from City warehouse, pet supply stores, and other vendors; transports animals to vet clinics, and in a state declared emergency, transports animals from mass shelters, as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED required; some experience in animal care is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintain throughout employment. Must complete a basic animal control training course within one year of hire. May be required to complete state-regulated euthanasia training and obtain a valid State of Louisiana Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician certificate within two years of hire.
