The City of San Marcos is accepting applications for a Part-Time Engineering Aide. This is an opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment, gain experience to multiple engineering disciplines, and be a part of making a difference in the San Marcos community!

OVERVIEW

The Engineering Aide performs a wide array of tasks supporting the Land Development, Traffic, and Capital Improvement divisions of Development Services, such as field work and data collection, public safety and community engagement, traffic engineering and analysis, and permit and plan review support.

HOURS REQUIRED 

While flexible based on the candidate’s personal schedule, the successful candidate will work an average of 20 hours per week. As a part-time employee, the Engineering Aide may work up to 999 hours per fiscal year. Scheduled hours will depend upon the Department’s need and budget approval.

Position Duties

    • Conduct field investigations including assisting with equipment installation, data collection, and documentation.
    • Research and analyze engineering records, maps, plans, and other technical documents.
    • Investigate public safety requests, concerns, and inquiries, including traffic signal operations and community complaints; perform field evaluations and assessments.
    • Conduct and evaluate traffic engineering studies, such as speed studies, sight distance analyses, warrant studies, and pedestrian, bicycle and vehicular traffic counts.
    • Gain exposure to engineering practices including review of private development entitlement plans, final engineering plans, and associated engineering technical reports.
    • Assist in reviewing right-of-way permits, traffic control plans, and grading plans for compliance with City standards, regulations, and codes.
    • Evaluate development permit packages for completeness using City of San Marcos checklists and standards.
    • Contribute to engineering file retention and record management processes including organizing, scanning, and data collection.
    • Assist with the radar speed feedback trailer program and enter data related to collision reports.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned to support the department’s goals and operations.
