This seasonal role supports Battelle ARO science and logistics missions, including retrieving a buried fuel cache and a buried science instrument near Pituffik Space Base (PSB)-two separate locations accessed by Twin Otter aircraft.
If you thrive in extreme environments, have strong leadership and field skills, and are ready for a once-in-a-lifetime Arctic experience, we want to hear from you.
What You'll Do
As the Field Camp Manager, you'll oversee all aspects of remote camp life and field operations, ensuring the team's safety, efficiency, and morale in challenging polar conditions. Key responsibilities include:
- Overseeing and participating in camp setup and take-down under direction of the Battelle ARO Science Project Manager.
- Leading field efforts to locate and retrieve buried equipment-using snow machines, chainsaws, winches, and shovels to raise the instrument and fuel cache.
- Serving as safety coordinator, enforcing safe work practices and reporting all incidents.
- Conducting daily communications check-ins with the Kangerlussuaq Site Supervisor and Science Project Manager.
- Coordinating aircraft logistics, including cargo prep, weather observations, and hazardous materials documentation.
- Managing camp maintenance, including sanitation, trash, structural checks, and bear watch schedules.
- Overseeing food planning, preparation, and cooking for a team of five in an extreme remote setting.
- Upholding NSF's Principles for Conducting Fieldwork in the Arctic and adhering to all environmental permits.
What You'll Bring
- 5+ years of relevant experience or a bachelor's degree with equivalent remote field experience (e.g., polar operations, high-altitude expeditions, camp logistics, or field maintenance).
- 2+ years of supervisory experience.
- Wilderness First Responder certification, valid driver's license, and passport.
- Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills in isolated, team-based environments.
Bonus Points For
- Prior Arctic or Antarctic fieldwork experience.
- Mechanical, construction, or generator maintenance skills.
- Flight and cargo coordination in remote environments.
- Hazardous Material Shipment Certification (49CFR, IATA DGR, or AFMAN).
- Experience cooking for small teams in field camps.
What to Expect
This is not your average job-it's an adventure. You'll be working and living in communal, rugged environments where flexibility, teamwork, and endurance are essential. Expect:
- Shared housing (tents, dorms, or hotels).
- Limited amenities-showers and internet may not always be available.
- Extreme cold (below –40°F) and variable weather.
- Long days, teamwork, and an incredible view of the Arctic ice sheet.
Schedule & Commitment
- Seasonal position: approximately April 10 – June 15.
- Includes ~80 hours of pre-deployment training and preparation.
- Typical schedule: 9 hours/day, 6 days/week, with variations based on weather and mission requirements.
