Job Description

Manages all departmental equipment, including repair, maintenance, purchase, inventory, and storage. Coordinates the daily cleaning and repair/maintenance of University Recreation indoor facilities. Serves as a Facility Manager and on the On-Call Rotation team.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Equipment & Facilities (80%)

  • Assists with operations of the Weinstein Center for Recreation facilities, including opening and closing, staffing and supervision, enforcement of policies and procedures, cleaning, and facility/equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Coordinates all equipment needs for the department, including purchase, inventory, storage, and repair and maintenance: 
    • Works closely with the fitness manager on the purchase of departmental equipment.
    • Works with the Member Services team to purchase rental equipment.
    • Performs major and minor equipment repairs, including replacement of damaged pads.
    • Maintains an inventory of equipment repair parts and tools.
    • Submits and follows up on work orders.
    • Submits and follows up on purchase orders.
    • Creates annual, electronic strength and cardio equipment inventory and storage reports.
    • Recommends equipment purchases.
    • Keeps accurate preventative maintenance schedules and logs, including annual inspections of fixed gymnasium equipment.
    • Creates and manages a (5) year equipment replacement plan.
  • Ensures the organization and cleanliness of all recreational facilities by working with appropriate University Recreation staff and University Facilities:
    • Collaborates with University Facilities custodial staff to identify cleaning priorities and monitor the effectiveness of University Facilities cleaning schedules.
    • Purchases and keeps an inventory of all facility cleaning supplies. Develops and enforces facility and equipment cleaning schedules for University Recreation staff.
  • Ensures that all indoor and outdoor storage areas are organized and well-maintained.
  • Oversees the laundry service, including repair and maintenance of laundry equipment and purchasing laundry supplies.
  • Supports locker management and maintenance throughout the facility, including repair and replacement of broken lockers.

University Recreation (20%)

  • Supervises student staff, including hiring, scheduling, and assigning work, reviewing performance, recommending salary increases, promotions or terminations.
  • Attends and participates in departmental employee training programs. Facilitates in-service training for employees in assigned areas.
  • Serves as Facility Manager (FM) during scheduled shifts (approximately 10hpw) to resolve challenging situations that may impact the operation of facilities and programs. Supervises student and part-time/temporary employees working in facility and program areas and ensures employee compliance with departmental policies and procedures. Performs facility and equipment inspections during each FM shift and enforces facility policies. Serves as point of contact to resolve customer service challenges and is point of contact during emergency situations to ensure emergency action plans are followed. 
  • Serves on the on-call rotation team.
  • Serves on University and Student Development committees as assigned.
  • Develops, monitors and annually reviews/updates all associated budgets to provide sound fiscal management for the equipment area. Budgets include operating expenses and student labor.
  • Serves as departmental liaison to University Facilities, University Facilities-Custodial, Corporate Equipment Companies and Corporate Supply Companies.
  • Advocates for inclusion of all people in University Recreation facilities, programs and communications while providing a commitment to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises direct student staff consisting of an Equipment Specialist and Assistants which includes hiring, scheduling, assigning work, and evaluating. Supervises departmental employees during Facility Manager shifts.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Requires the employee to work inside with some outside work
  • Frequently requires medium-heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.) and stooping during eqpt. repair/cleaning
  • Requires employee to serve on the Facility Manager Rotation Team and On-Call Team
  • Requires the employee to work early morning hours
  • Ability to be certified to drive University vehicles is required

QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, skills & ability

  • Must possess thorough knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair; knowledge of specific industry-related tasks, methods, safety and training requirements required
  • General knowledge of recreation, athletic or fitness facility operations required
  • Ability to read, interpret and enforce policies and procedures
  • Ability to resolve disruptive situations and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to balance a variety of tasks with competency and accuracy
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification required within 30 days of employment
  • Valid driver's license held for at least 3 years REQUIRED
  • Computer proficiency and ability to learn specialized software, including but not limited to, Workday and InnoSoft Fusion.

Education & experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Health, Physical Education or Recreation-related field preferred, but may be substituted with appropriate experience, knowledge, skills and abilities
  • 3-5 years of successful general maintenance experience or related field preferred; experience in recreation and facility supervision preferred

Grade 4: $18 to 27.00 per hour

Scheduled Hours: Monday through Friday, 5:30 am to 2 pm; schedule may vary. Some nights and weekends
