About the Department

The City of Yucaipa is conducting a recruitment for an Assistant Maintenance Worker.
The first review of applications is scheduled for the week of 11/24/2025.
Position Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist with maintaining a safe and presentable environment through regular maintenance activities at various public parks, streets, and facilities.
- Assist with the maintenance of City parks and facilities; remove trash, litter, leaves, and tree trimmings.
- Assist with weed abatement; including the application of herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers.
- Assist with landscaping; trim, prune, plant, water, stake, and maintain City trees and shrubs.
- Assist with facility maintenance; painting, lifting, moving, woodwork, and sign replacements.
- Assist with street and sidewalk maintenance; asphalt work, concrete work.
- Assist with reporting, documenting, and removing graffiti.
- Assist with setting up for special events.
- Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Safely operate a variety of hand tools and light to heavy equipment; maintain and clean tools, vehicles and equipment.
- Work independently in the absence of on-site supervision.
- Receive and respond to questions from the public; provide information as appropriate to resolve public service complaints.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, other agencies and the public using principles of good customer service.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Basic uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment.
- Safe work practices.
- Principles and practices of effective customer service.
Ability to:
- Learn to construct, maintain and repair a variety of public works facilities.
- Learn traffic control methods.
- Learn to perform tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities.
- Understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Perform heavy manual work.
- Serve as an integral team player, which involves flexibility, cooperation and communication.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- On a continuous basis, know and understand operations, and observe safety rules; intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify and locate equipment and facilities; interpret work orders; remember equipment location; and explain jobs to others.
- Intermittently, sit while driving a piece of equipment; stand and walk while performing maintenance activities; bend and twist to adjust equipment; kneel and squat to review work; climb up on to heavy equipment to begin operation; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; and lift or carry weight of 100 pounds or less.
Experience and Education
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities for this position is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
No formal experience is required. Experience in general construction is highly desirable.
Education:
Equivalent to completion of twelfth grade.
License and Certificate
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.
Environmental Conditions
Work is generally performed outdoors with exposure to traffic, outdoor weather - including extreme heat and cold, and to wet and humid conditions. Employees may be assigned to work weekends and/or holidays and are required to respond to after-hour calls, as necessary.
