The Paper Machine Superintendent is responsible for leading all operations of the paper machine area to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective production of quality paper products. This role drives process optimization; and fosters a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Direct and coordinate daily operations of one or more paper machines to meet production, quality, and cost targets.
- Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and housekeeping standards.
- Monitor and optimize key performance indicators (KPIs) such as machine efficiency, downtime, waste, and energy use.
- Partner with maintenance, engineering, and quality teams to troubleshoot and resolve production issues.
Continuous Improvement
- Lead root-cause problem solving and continuous improvement initiatives (Lean, Six Sigma, etc.) to improve uptime, product quality, and productivity.
- Analyze data and trends to identify areas for process and cost improvements.
- Drive consistency across shifts and adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Safety and Compliance
- Enforce all safety procedures and standards; champion a zero-incident safety culture.
- Participate in safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
- Ensure compliance with all environmental, quality, and corporate regulations.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Maintenance, Engineering, and Quality departments to coordinate planned outages, process changes, and product trials.
- Support capital projects and process upgrades, including commissioning and startup activities.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Paper Science, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
- 3-5 years of paper mill or industrial manufacturing experience
- Strong technical understanding of paper machine operations, process control systems, and quality parameters.
