Woodbridge School District is accepting applications for a Special Education Life Skills teacher at WECEC. This is a full-time, 10-month, benefit-eligible teaching position. JOB SUMMARY:
The Special Education Teacher for the Life Skills classroom provides individualized instruction and support to students with moderate to severe disabilities, focusing on developing academic, social, communication, functional, and daily living skills. This educator creates and implements specialized instructional programs aligned with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), collaborates with general education staff and related service providers, and fosters an inclusive, supportive environment that promotes student independence and success.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Must hold or be eligible for teaching certification in elementary education in the State of Delaware
Must hold or be eligible for special education certification in the State of Delaware, Autism certification preferred
Experience working with students with diverse learning needs and disabilities
Ability to design and implement differentiated instruction that meets the needs of all learners
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Passion for teaching and dedication to student success
Ability to create an inclusive, respectful, and positive learning environment
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design and deliver differentiated instruction that addresses each student’s IEP goals, learning needs, and developmental levels.
Develop and implement lesson plans focusing on academic skills, communication, adaptive behavior, social-emotional growth, and functional life skills.
Incorporate hands-on, real-life learning experiences to promote independence and community readiness.
Modify curriculum and assessments to meet individual learning styles and abilities.
Utilize evidence-based teaching practices and data-driven decision-making to monitor student progress.
Create a structured, safe, and supportive classroom environment that fosters student engagement and positive behavior.
Implement and monitor behavior intervention plans (BIPs) as needed.
Support students with personal care needs, mobility, feeding, toileting, and other daily living activities as appropriate.
Teach and reinforce communication skills when applicable.
Collaborate with general education teachers, paraprofessionals, therapists, and other service providers to ensure cohesive instructional and behavioral support.
Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, goals, and strategies for continued growth at home.
Participate in IEP meetings, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities.
Provide guidance and direction to paraprofessionals or instructional assistants working within the classroom.
Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with federal, state, and district regulations.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records, data logs, and progress reports.
Ensure compliance with IDEA, ADA, and district special education policies.
Demonstrate patience, empathy, and cultural sensitivity when working with students and families.
Maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards in all interactions.
Engage in ongoing professional learning to enhance skills and stay informed about best practices in special education and life skills instruction.
