Parents as Teachers (PAT) Educator

 

REPORTS TO: PAT Program Coordinator / GCPS Early Childhood Coordinator

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 months

 

POSITION TYPE: Part-Time, hourly pay

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Parent Educator is responsible for delivering high-quality, evidence-based home visitation services to families with children born through five using the Parents as Teachers (PAT) model. The parent educator partners with parents to enhance parenting skills, promote optimal child development, and strengthen family well-being through personal visits, developmental screenings, and resource connections.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Home Visits

 

Conduct regular personal visits with families following the PAT model to provide

parent-child interaction, development-centered parenting, and family well-being content.

Build trusting relationships with families, respecting cultural and individual differences.

Support parents in understanding child development and in using positive parenting

practices.

 

Screenings and Assessments

Conduct developmental, social-emotional, health, hearing, and vision screenings for

children as outlined in the PAT model.?

Assist families in identifying developmental milestones and connecting to additional

services when needed.

 

Documentation and Data Entry

Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential records of home visits, assessments, and

family goals using approved data systems.

Complete required reports and documentation in accordance with program and funding

requirements.

 

Group Connections

Plan and facilitate group meetings to strengthen social connections among families and

promote shared learning experiences.

Develop creative, engaging, and age-appropriate group connection topics based on

family needs and interests.

 

Resource and Referral

 

Identify community resources and support families in accessing services that promote

health, education, and self-sufficiency.

Collaborate with community partners to strengthen family support networks.

 

Professional Development

 

Participate in the required Parents as Teachers foundational and model implementation

training, and maintain certification through ongoing professional development.

Attend staff meetings, reflective supervision sessions, and continuing education

opportunities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education: Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Social

Work, Family Studies, Psychology, Health, or a related field required (or equivalent degree as approved by the Parents as Teachers National Center).

 

Experience: Previous experience working with young children and families is preferred. Demonstrated understanding of early childhood development, family systems,

and community resources.

 

Skills & Competencies:

Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Spanish-speaking is a plus.

Demonstrated respect for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

Ability to establish rapport and maintain effective, professional relationships with families and community partners.

Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet program requirements.

Computer use skills (word processing, spreadsheets), ability to learn required programs.

Proficient in data entry, electronic documentation, and online systems.

Must complete Parents as Teachers Foundational and Model Implementation Training prior to delivering PAT services.

 

Other Requirements:

 

Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and ability to travel within the Granville, Franklin, and Vance county service area.

Flexibility to work occasional evenings or weekends to meet family needs.

Successful completion of background checks as required by local, state, or federal guidelines.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

Ability to lift up to 25 lbs (educational materials, supplies).

Ability to sit, stand, bend, and move during home visits and group events.

Comfort working in home and community settings with varying conditions.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

A combination of office, home, and community-based environments.

Frequent travel to family homes, community sites, and partner agencies.
