About the Department
Assists in the supervisory leadership to assigned shift custodians and performs duties related to the overall cleanliness of assigned college facilities. Under limited supervision, performs tasks necessary to ensure the general cleanliness of buildings and grounds, as well as a specifically assigned area on the assigned shift.
Position Duties
A. Supervises assigned shift custodial staff and performs custodial duties in a particular work area of the college with minimal supervision and responsible for the outcomes and losses of their efforts.
B. Maintains college buildings, grounds, and equipment to insure cleanliness. Assists with snow removal of all college sidewalks and walking paths; this requires the operation of motorized equipment.
C. Coordinates, schedules, and leads office moves and special event setups.
D. Repairs, inspects, shampoos, replaces, and cleans contents and fixtures of the buildings, as assigned.
E. Responds to emergencies and assists with emergency evacuations as assigned.
F. Reports building deficiencies. Conducts minor plumbing repairs and general maintenance of deficiencies found.
G. Provides excellent customer service to visitors, staff, and students.
H. Acts as a custodial liaison between all shifts to address any unforeseen circumstances and facilitates the college’s resources to a successful conclusion. Communicates with the Director of Facilities to secure additional assistance, as needed.
I. Interacts with the public safety office on the assigned shift to address any circumstances outside of routine operations and facilitates the college’s resources to a successful conclusion.
J. Informs the assigned shift custodial staff of any specific tasks or projects assigned by the Director of Facilities and hosts shift meetings.
K. Coordinates department operation; ensures the proper ordering of supplies for all supervised custodians on their shift. Assists with managing the custodial department budget and making recommendations for any new supplies or capital equipment.
L. Conserves energy by turning off lights in unoccupied spaces.
Other Responsibilities:
A. Performs other duties as assigned.
B. Serves as a back-up to other staff members, as needed.
C. Assists new employees and coordinates the activities of as needed and student workers.
D. Serves as a member of the emergency response team.
E. Responds to the functions of the position in an environmental setting which might include cold, heat, odor, dampness, dirt, fumes, dust, oil, grease, noise, or vibration on a frequent basis. Appropriate protective devices are available as required.
F. Serves on college committee for special events.
G. Coordinates the College Risk Management Program in a capacity appropriate to this position. This includes actions to ensure that the statutory and common law health and safety rights are extended to all visitors, employees and students; ensures that the College’s buildings and grounds are maintained in a safe condition; and provides careful supervision and protection of all of the College’s real and personal property.
Minimum Qualifications
A. High school diploma or equivalent with ability to read, write, perform basic arithmetic, and follow verbal and written instructions required.
B. At least three years of commercial or institutional custodial experience required.
C. Ability to lift 50 lbs. with or without an accommodation; ability to climb ladders and to move stage platforms and chairs, etc. required.
D. Ability to pass a physical exam if offered the position.
E. Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
F. Proficiency in English required.
G. Valid IL driver’s license required.
H. Possess Host machine certification, or willing to obtain.
I. Possess NIMS certifications, or willing to obtain.
Other Qualifications
Hiring range: $17.20/hr. min. - $18.92/hr. 1st quartile - $20.64/hr. mid.
Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
