About the Department

Professional religious and spiritual counseling and educational work, primarily for the needs of the inmate population, and some Sheriff’s Office needs. Maintains a professional level of confidentiality (security exceptions). Coordinates with outside religious and non-religious agencies and volunteers, offering guidance and scheduling events. Assists in matters in the Security Division and the Support Services Division as needed.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Chaplain Services Manager. Performance is evaluated through observation, results obtained, oral/written reports, and appropriate employee performance appraisals.

Position Duties

  • Responsible for coordinating religious program opportunities for inmates of all recognized faiths
  • Ensure activities and documentation are consistent with all relevant statutes, guidelines, and standards
  • Responsible for attending and/or participating in the monthly meeting of the Inmate Welfare Fund Committee
  • Recruitment and screening of DOJ volunteers
  • Conducts volunteer orientations in accordance with facility rules and regulations
  • Supervise, coordinate and schedule DOJ volunteers
  • Maintain activity files on all active DOJ volunteers screened and oriented
  • Distribute a monthly schedule of volunteer activities
  • Maintain a list of active volunteers and provide the same to the entrance lobby for security reference, updating it every thirty days or as needed
  • Maintain a record of volunteer hours and any volunteers recruited, and issue a monthly report reflecting this in a manner that falls within departmental guidelines
  • Responsible for interacting with various religious agencies and representing the Jail in religious community activities
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining a good working relationship with provider agencies, other county departments, and employees
  • Refer individuals counseled to proper departments or outside agencies when appropriate
  • Upon request, provide satisfactory counseling for inmates, staff, and family in matters of religion and spirituality; in one on one or group sessions

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma / GEDRequired
Associate Degree or BetterPreferred
Preferred Major(s):Theology, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice, Human Services or other related field

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
  • One (1) or more years of related experience
  • Any combination of experience and education/training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:
  • Be an ordained or licensed member of a recognized religious denomination
  • Basic or higher International Conference of Police Chaplains (ICPC) Certification or other like organization as approved by the Agency
  • Current, valid Florida driver license
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Sit/stand for moderate periods
  • See/hear at a normal range
  • Speak, read, write, and understand English fluently
  • Ambulate independently
  • Lift/carry 25 pounds
  • Bend and squat
  • Manual dexterity
  • Drive a vehicle

Other Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of current counseling techniques and principles
  • Has knowledge of basic computer programs and office machines
  • Considerable knowledge of a wide variety of religious beliefs
  • Ability to effectively counsel a wide variety of inmates
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to keep records and maintain files on client progress
  • Ability to manage time in an effective manner and work on multiple tasks
