Longwood Gardens is seeking a Horticulturist to support the Ornamental Kitchen Garden as a part of the Outdoor Landscapes team. This position plays a vital part in growing and harvesting produce for our onsite fine dining restaurant and maintaining exceptional display gardens. You’ll collaborate closely with the Outdoor Landscapes team to ensure seasonal excellence across the Idea Garden and broader Outdoor Landscapes. Responsibilities include:

  • Performing daily horticultural tasks including planting, weeding, mulching, watering, staking, trellising, pruning, and pest management
  • Monitoring and managing soil health, irrigation systems, and seasonal plant care routines
  • Plan and execute crop rotations and succession planting schedules
  • Harvesting, packing, and delivering produce to Longwood’s fine dining restaurant, ensuring freshness and quality
  • Communicating regularly with the culinary team to align harvests with menu needs
  • Collaborating with the Outdoor Landscape Manager and Senior Horticulturist to design and install garden and container displays
  • Maintaining assigned perimeter landscape areas and support seasonal projects across Outdoor Landscapes
  • Safely operating and maintaining horticultural equipment including hand tools, power tools, and machinery
  • Following all safety protocols and procedures, including proper use of PPE and pesticide handling
  • Training and mentoring staff, students, and volunteers in horticultural techniques and garden care
  • Participating in cross-divisional projects and support other garden sections as needed
  • Supporting educational programming related to the Ornamental Kitchen Garden and representing Longwood’s horticultural excellence to the public through tours and presentations 
  • Supporting snow removal operations and Longwood Christmas displays
  • Working occasional weekends, holidays, and evenings as required to support watering operations and seasonal projects

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • An associate degree in Horticulture or equivalent practical experience
  • A minimum of 2 years of hands-on horticultural gardening experience
  • Experience operating horticultural hand tools and power equipment
  • Basic project management and computer application skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration abilities
  • The ability to bend, stoop, stand, and kneel for long periods of time
  • The ability to lift 50 pounds
  • The ability to work outside and in varying weather conditions
  • A Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator Certification or a willingness and ability to obtain within six months of hire date
  • A Forklift Operation Certification or a willingness and ability to obtain within 1 year of hire date
  • Aerial Platform/Scissors Lift Certification or a willingness and ability to obtain within 1 year of hire date
  • A valid Driver’s License is required
