Directional Drilling Apprentice
Colorado Springs Utilities Directional Drilling team is seeking a Directional Drilling Apprentice! In this role, you will maintain and operate directional drilling equipment, drilling fluid mixing equipment, vacuum excavation equipment, and assist in barricading and traffic control. You will have the opportunity to become an expert in excavating equipment while working with a team to support the installation of underground electric, gas, and water systems, as well as construction restoration activities.
This position is part of a formal apprenticeship program within the Construction and Maintenance Specialist trade. As such, pay for this position will begin at $26.77/hour and will progress throughout the duration of the apprenticeship based on the pay schedule below.
- Step 1 - $26.77/hr (1st year)
- Step 2 - $28.11/hr (1st year)
- Step 3 - $29.44/hr (2nd year)
- Step 4 - $31.45/hr (2nd year)
- Journey Level Turnout - $33.46/hr
What You Will be Doing...
- Operating directional drills, hydro-vac excavation equipment, drilling fluid mixing equipment, and Digi-trac locating equipment, and hydraulic & fusing equipment
- Working with electric, gas, and water/wastewater to install new service lines, gas main, and streetlights
- Working with primary and secondary electric lines
- Measuring existing utility lines for crossings, understanding and sketching pothole logs
- Communicating with supervisor, co-workers, and the general public, reading and interpreting maps, and operating two-way radios
*Please note:
- This position requires the successful candidate to work overtime, weekends, holidays, etc. as business needs dictate
- You will be expected to follow safety rules and company standards and work in confined spaces
- You will be required to complete training that will be evaluated every six (6) months for successful completion
Who You Are...
- Possession of a valid, unrestricted driver’s license is required
- Relevant and progressively responsible experience in a construction or related environment
- Directional Drilling Vacuum Truck experience and knowledge of basic mechanical and hydraulic principles is valued
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker and air brake endorsements are preferred, and the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire is required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exerts 50-100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or 25-50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or 10-20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
- Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions and intense noises.
